April 21, 2022 at 12:27 am #236173I’m worried that we will continue to drop down into NLN, as there is almost certainly not going to be any money to spend on, at least half decent new players.
I did trust Swann for the first few years. But the recent asset stripping, plus the neglect of our team and our ground, (we haven’t even got a working scoreboard damnit), is hardly what I would call inspiring.
I really do fear for for the future, and hope that it doesn’t unravel in the next two or three seasons.
Yep pretty much spot on … now got used to the fact of NL and its woes but the thought and worry of a further drop is both shocking and sadly a very real possibility depending what does or doesnt happen re the clubs ownership and any subsequent investment etc.
They are a disgrace and need to go NOW.

April 21, 2022 at 7:17 am #236175Fair play to you Bucks, but I will say although you took flack for supporting him, you dished plenty out to those of us that saw straight through him from the start, especially to me when all I was doing was pointing out valuable missed commercial opportunities. Anyway we are where we are and I think it’s time to draw a line under it.
I would give a limb for mid table obscurity next season right now!
April 21, 2022 at 9:26 pm #236233There is nothing happening on or off the field to make me optimistic for next season. The young guns alone will not be able to stem the tide of the SUFC landslide. Lets not beat about the bush, There needs to be a clear out. If our young players are as good as some fans think then the cream of the crop will get snapped up by other clubs. That leaves us with the young players that need time to better themselves. This does not bode well. Just look at the players brought in by KH to supposedly keep us in League 2. In a word DISASTEROUS. The positivity of trying to get back into League 2 at the first time of asking is already being dampened and all I am hearing from KH is that we need to look towards the younger players to get the club back to where it belongs. The time frame for this is now the subject of debate. I appreciate that the club will most probably be waiting until players contracts have come to an end before formulating new personnel. My concern is that by the end of this season and the start of next season we will not have time to assemble a squad capable of competing at the higher end of he National League. KH has taken half a season to get us to where we are now. Do I really believe he will lead us to some modicum of success. “No”. Will the youth alone be enough to be competitive in the NL. !No”. Where will our new players come from ? or are there no new players.it would be good to know what the masterplan is or are we doing what we have done for the past 3 to 4 seasons and making it up as we go along. Next year I would take your boots along to every game because there is a fair chance you will get a game.
April 22, 2022 at 2:04 pm #236260Pointless going over all of that again, Pat. In my defence I don’t think we’re where we are because of “missed commercial opportunities”.
I believe Swann’s denied it but my understanding is that he and his family played a major role in bringing players to the club. If that is the case then I believe it was the main contributory factor to our being in the current predicament. Recruitment should always have been left to the manager and his staff, with the Chairman’s role being to look after the financial side and that alone. Over and above this his hire and fire attitude to managers has been a disaster.
Where I have some sympathy for Swann is covid, which will undoubtedly have hit his business interests very hard given its impact on the hospitality sector. However, covid hit most people hard and I think it’s poor for Swann to use this as an excuse, which he appears to be doing even if he is accepting responsibility for the club’s plight. It certainly appears that he’s put his personal and business interests above those of the club, which would be more understandable had he not been the one to have created the problems in the first place.
Swann’s saying he wants the club to be financially sound but if he’s transferred assets to cover losses — and I believe this to be the case but, again, cannot be 100% certain — I think this is very poor given where it’s left us. As I’ve said before his plans were sound but his execution and decision-making have been the exact opposite. Ultimately, Swann has taken the club from a great position — we were in the Div 1 play-offs just a few short years ago — to an appalling one and I will never, ever forgive him for that.

I agree it’s pointless, that’s exactly why I said let’s just draw a line and move on. I am not saying for one minute that missed commercial opportunities are the reason we are where we are BUT, they are a big cog in the whole shit show that has got us here!

April 22, 2022 at 3:32 pm #236264Such mismanagement was also a key indicator that the Swanns had flaws in ownership. It wasn’t the reason for our collapse, but shoddy handling of more minor affairs is unprofessional and creates the impression that the higher ups are incompetent.

April 22, 2022 at 6:13 pm #236271Fair point, Pat, ultimately we’re both on the same side!
April 24, 2022 at 1:10 pm #236328To be totally honest – an overwhelming sense of relief – this has been coming for over 2 years now and I freely admit to not travelling to Glanford park for 3 years. I supported the Iron through the dark years of the 70’s when we applied for re-election on a regular basis but have never wavered in my support until a certain Mr Swann showed has face ( did no-one realise what he did to Gainsborough Trinity before accepting his blood money). Successive mangers have has absolutely no chance with the embargo in place so hope we have a complete clear out of playing staff and start again from scratch. This can only happen if Swann ‘disappears’ taking his nepotism and sycophantic apologists with him. It is not loyality to the club blindly accepting what has happened over the past 3 years – wake up, smell the roses, and get behind a ‘new’ club and future. I’ll be back as soon as Swann sells up but not before – don’t suppose he fancies his chances at Grimsby or Hull ?

April 24, 2022 at 3:24 pm #236333Just wish it had happened last season instead of wasting this season altogether.
April 24, 2022 at 7:03 pm #236337What! And given Swann even more reasons to blame Covid?

Not one of your own though?
May 9, 2022 at 3:30 pm #237052The effect of money dominates and you need an astronomical amount of money to stabilise in the 2nd tier, which makes a dream like our 00s good run seem next to impossible now.
Thank you Mr Wharton for sharing your hobby with us…
May 10, 2022 at 8:08 pm #237195Been watching them too long to change or stop now.
Plan for a least the first couple of seasons in turning it into a adventure, plenty of new grounds and who knows may battle through to the 1st round of the FA Cup and get a league side on the telly.1 user thanked author for this post.
May 10, 2022 at 8:19 pm #237196I just kept hoping for some kind of miracle, that we would string some results together and retain our league status.
I just recently fractured my elbow, but the pain is not as bad as the Iron getting relegated out of the football league made me feel…

There is one advantage you have got Lord, at least the pain you are suffering from your elbow will go away and get better in time, this situation SUFC have been guided into by Swann, has no chance what so ever of ending well, it could be heading for ampitation as the only cure (removed from existance, don’t rule out anything with this guy).
