Genuine question.
NI raises some apparent contradictions between religious belief and government policy/attitudes towards poverty, wealth, lying and deception, extending help to others, and more besides. Christianity also has the parable of the good Samaritan, supporting those in need, rather than shunning them and crossing the road. The environment too, should be protected by all of us, so the ‘trees clap their hands’, according to Jesus.
Yet, so much of the politics and attitudes of Trump, the Tories and UKIP seem in direct contradiction to Christian teachings. In fact for anyone of religious persuasion, they could easily appear the devil incarnate.
So, can someone explain how it’s possible to praise and follow Trump/the Tories/Kippers, while feeling at home in the house of God?
November 8, 2022 at 11:21 am #248290I do feel discomfort here. I can see where you are coming from, in that there are those who seem to hold some horrid opinions and are attracted to these parties without consideration or empathy for others. However, and it’s a large however (for Bucks or anyone wanting to seize on my second sentence for evidence I am someone out to get them), I find it too judgemental. Surely it’s possible to see that those Christians who do can do so out of what they see as good intentions and they think this is the path to betterment for all. It is possible for someone to hold different opinions in good intent, but be mistaken or deluded (not delusional!).
Sure, there are some who may well be small minded and bigoted. Often the defenders against this position ignore many who are and pretend everyone is approaching their right wing stance in good intent. However, this is too broad and discounts many Christians who aren’t the jingoistic and bigoted types. In my opinion at least.
November 8, 2022 at 1:01 pm #248294When you put in your title “Genuine Christian” ,what do you mean?
Do you mean a regenerate Christian compared to an unregenerate Christian?November 8, 2022 at 1:26 pm #248295Traditionally (sic) the right have always supported the status quo of the church whilst the left have often dismissed it.
A broad sweep of the brush perhaps but it may explain some of it.
November 8, 2022 at 2:07 pm #248303It’s a classic case by a large contingent of the religious (in this case ‘Christians’) of manipulating and distorting religion to exert control.
November 8, 2022 at 2:16 pm #248308I’s say someone who follows christ,a socialist
They claim to be acting for god so this is a very fair comment from gurneyNovember 8, 2022 at 2:26 pm #248311Jesus wasn’t a socialist; the ideology wasn’t present then. Christians would say they are following in Christ’s ideal through charity. They’d believe they’re helping through more capitalist means (not saying Jesus is a capitalist either), even if you think they’re mistaken.

November 14, 2022 at 10:27 am #248642Disappointing response from the Christian soldiers here, particularly when some
seem happy enough to put forward their far-right views alongside religious belief, just witness BPG’s support elsewhere on here for ‘othering’ the Albanian waiter! And, how was it possible to support Johnson, given his depravity? Or the Tory party in general these days, given its drift to the far-right, its attitude towards foreigners, the poor and less well off?
The same with support for Trump, in spite of his obscene flaunting of wealth, his lying, his disrespect for women, non-Americans and the poor. Just how is it possible to reconcile politics and religion here?
And here’s another thing; how is it that those who claim to care passionately about the irreligious nature of abortion (‘How can you kill a person?’ they cry) often support the death penalty, and often really couldn’t care less about the welfare of anybody except people like themselves?
So, come on you Christian Tories, the irreligious hordes of this board want some answers.
