Probably comes with having an ex centre back as a manager.
If 3 centre backs isn’t working you obviously need to bring on a fourth and play one in midfield.
July 16, 2024 at 8:57 pm #288259On a more serious note we are trying to play 3 at the back with a squad full of “back 4” defenders.
July 16, 2024 at 10:14 pm #288263Good game, Trinity deserved something out of it, 2 down and 2 quick goals put us on terms, 3-2 up and Trinity pulled it back and should have gone back in front, then we scored 2 late in the game, entertaining but some work to be done yet with poor defending for 2 of the goals, but Trinity looked a strong side and Russ is doing a good job.

Has a swelling where a cut is which requires a stitch or two where a stud pierced his skin. Butler expects him to be out for a week as there is no fracture or break.
Butler also said that’s us done now in terms of signings as the squad has reached 20 players. I find it a bit odd though because Abraham is still here on trial and came on for last 30mins. Going by that Burden and Hunter must have simply gone elsewhere.
Shame really as Burden looked promising.
July 17, 2024 at 8:07 am #288272Feel a bit short if that’s us done, still think we needed a solid RB to replace Ogle.
And wingers…. Feel too light and law and Roberts both likely to pick up a knock or two!
Unless the plan is wing backs and 3 CB’s ☹️July 17, 2024 at 8:50 am #288274I think that the ‘solid RB’ arrived yesterday.

Left footer?
July 17, 2024 at 2:15 pm #288287Nicholson is a left sided CB/ LB. Nicholson said yesterday that Butler has brought him in as a left sided CB. We’ll definitely be playing with 3 CB’s with wing backs as we’ve played that formation throughout all the pre season games.
If we do switch up formation throughout the season though it still only leaves us with Law, Roberts as genuine wide options. Carlton played there last season but is more of a striker. That’s why I’m surprised we didn’t sign Burden as he wouldn’t have been on much and can play all across the front line.
July 17, 2024 at 3:11 pm #288289Surprised we have got extra cover for the front line, however perhaps he intends to use Beestin there?
My slight concern is lack of cover down the right side if Barrows get injured, and if he can actually be effective within the final third. Furthermore, what will Roberts’ position be? He’s by some way our highest earner and has to utilised effectively.
Despite saying that, pleasantly surprised by the calibre of signing, was expecting the worst a couple of weeeks ago but the club have landed some good players for the level and seem to have clear idea with how they want to play.
July 17, 2024 at 5:36 pm #288298Looks like scales will be the right wing back. He played right back at farsley before signing for us.
They said they will use the loan market to cover injuries and suspensions.
Should score plenty from set pieces with the extra height in the team and Nicholson having a long throw.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 17, 2024 at 6:40 pm #288306Yes but can he match what Boxall could do?
July 17, 2024 at 8:41 pm #288332Beestin will definitely be used as a striker so we’ll be fine up there. Law and scales will be used as wing backs. I can’t see where Kelly fits in as we have Denton.
Why do we need 3 left wing backs ?
July 17, 2024 at 8:59 pm #288337Left side central defender or full back, Kelly can cover at right back, then there are injuries and suspensions and you need a subs bench, so everyone will be needed Burny

We’ll be playing with wing backs and he wasn’t even an attacking full back so highly doubt he’ll suit playing as a wing back. Especially not right wing back and we have Barrows and scales as options there.
July 17, 2024 at 9:57 pm #288340How do you know we will be playing with wing backs, in preseason he will variate formations, where will Denton play or Barrows, just wait until we start before saying we are playing wing backs, last night Roberts was playing more central, but we might play wing backs we might not but you are predicting as if you know
July 17, 2024 at 10:36 pm #288341last night Roberts was playing more central
Of course Roberts was playing centrally in that system. Only two positions he can play in that formation is a an attacking central midfielder or off a main striker, both which are central.
You don’t need to be any footballing genius to expect Butler to field that formation when he’s set up with it in every pre season game so far. I mean come on Mick, let’s be serious here.
Butler signing another CB hints towards that as well.
There’s a chance he could do a complete u-turn and field a different system, but it’s highly unlikely.
