Georgie was part of the deal that saw David Sloan – a goal-scoring winger of some quality – go to Oxford Utd. If memory serves, DS was worth one George Kerr + £2,000.
GK was a gutsy player with occasional bursts of pace followed by moments of poor ball control then sudden, unexpected goals. He also took the corner at Hillsboro which was nutted home by Cass for a well known 4th division side to stun SW out of the 4th round of the FA cup in 1970.
Never the same player after a tragic leg break at Gainsborough. (?)
A lovely bloke! For one – maybe two seasons – I got lifts with him from Burton Stather to the ground on match days. (Some reserve fixtures too.)

I was there the night George broke his leg at Gainsborough in a Lincs Senior Cup match. I bet Misterton Mick was as well.

I was Bill and when he crashed his car outside the Northolme when he was manager of Rotherham, spoke to George a few times about both incidents, and George is one of the nicest people you could ever meet, he loved talking about his time at Scunny.

Remember George doing his ” push and run ” pass several times when he tricked the defender, knocked it passed him on one side then ran round him the other side to collect the ball and carry on. Always thought Heath, Kerr and Cassidy were a great attacking trio in their day for the Iron and yes Terry Heath the best ever player to wear an Iron shirt IMO.

I remember him trying to do a “Pele” ei recieving the ball and flicking it over his head while running forward, didn’t work too often.
I also remember a back pass from the halfway line against Millwall in the cup that went out for a corner.
He was having a great season before the broken leg though.

I was at Gainsborough that night too.

George was the regular corner taker and his style was to keep his right arm stiff down by his side.

One of those “stiff arm specials” was the assist for Cassidy’s winning header against Sheff Weds on that memorable afternoon!

I remember another John Eyre was he decent? they seemed to love him on Humberside in the 90’s and that keeper with long hair but I cant remember his name .

I remember John Eyre scoring a rocket into the top of the net, from an corner, against Brighton, when they used to ground share with Gillingham. There wasn’t and still isn’t a goalkeeper in the world that could have saved that.

    Happy days. UTBI
