Where were you on the day we won the World Cup? For some unknown reason my Dad had us in a caravan in Filey (probably a cheap week) so I could only listen on the wireless.

My older brother and I watched the final on TV in our ” sitting room ” ( how quaint is that expression these days? ). I went off sulking into the ” backyard ” when German equalised late on but returned soon enough for the famous extra time win. I can still hear Ken Wolstenholme uttering that famous line like it was yesterday and what a magic day it was for an English eleven year old watching it all happen live in front of him.

Lying on our setee at home in Scunny. Watching it on tv (black and white of course).

Recovering from a nasty bout of jaundice which meant I missed the last two weeks of school. I had also missed the England v Mexico game as I was out of it for the same reason. I remember my dad coming into the bedroom to tell me the score!

For some reason, probably youthful naivety, I never doubted we’d win. Even when Weber got the equaliser.

    Cue Ken Wolstenholme!

    My 14th Birthday!!!
Never forget sulking like IA at the sense of ‘unfairness’ when my Birthday got spoiled by the German equaliser. Didn’t take long to start celebrating again!!
Did anyone see the Alf Garnett film when he and the son in law returned from Wembley having seen ‘the 3 West Ham boys lift the trophy.’ They didn’t arrive home til Wednesday .. very much the worse for wear. The ‘Missus’ was waiting on the step in her rollers and demanded to know where they’d been.
‘They played extra time, didn’t they … silly M…!!’

Had tickets for the group games at Hillsborough but, as others, the final on TV at home in the front/sitting room in Scunny.

My 11th birthday watched with mi dad and some of his mates, no going down the pub to watch in them days. They did go to the open hearth later though. Remember world cup Willie the song and all, remember the next world cup and our class (all boys in them days) giving pop Larvin (little Hitler) 1p to buy the sheet music for “Back home” so we could sing it in music class, maybe he wasn’t all bad?

Town twinning? That brings back some memories.

A good response to youngsters when they say “What have you done that we can’t do?”

“Watch England win the World Cup, something that you’ll never do 😉”

I was 11 too, my Dad had moved job from Gunness Wharf to Leeds when I was 10, and we watched it (in black & white) in the front room in our house in Leeds. Like many, the German equaliser so upset me, when I heard the ice cream van round the corner (Mr Softee – not a patch on Sargents) I went out & bought one. Returned in time to see the goals go in, happy days.

And on missing Sargents icecream, I also miss Riley’s crisps. Susan Riley was in my class at ‘Hendy Av’, and everyone really looked forward to her birthday parties, crisps heaven!

I was in class with someone who’s parents owned a Chinese takeaway. Harboured dreams of free chips and curry sauce. Never materialised. Well, maybe once!

At home black & white telly. Major trauma when the last minute equaliser went in, but extra time was great. No penalties so assume there would of been a replay if it had ended 2v2.

Watched through a cloud of smoke because my great uncle was a Capstan Full Stength chain smoker, one lit straight after the other. He couldn’t walk to the bottom of our drive. Last day I saw him.

Black and white TV at home in Ashby. I burst into tears when West Germany equalised. What a moment when Hurst’s third went in, however.

I also recall the old FA Cup Final days when celebs such as Bruce Forsyth were wheeled out if Spurs were involved. Pretty much the only live football available on TV in those days, of course. I once ran up the garden to get something from the shed while the ‘pre-match build-up’ was on and caught my toe on dad’s cold frame, which was next to the garden path. I was in agony but kept quiet because I didn’t want to miss the match.

To this day that toe is crooked as I must have broken it; and, of course, over time it just set.

With that and the angry bees/wasps (I forget which) that stung your face that time, I get the impression the garden has always had it in for you. Maybe it’s one of the usual suspects. :-)

Ha ha, you’re right, Siderite, and that was during the cricket world cup final when I retreated to the garden because I couldn’t bear to watch the game unfolding.

Obviously someone up there doesn’t like me watching big sporting occasions…

That World Cup, eh. Charltons thunderbolt against … Mexico? Pak Doo Ik at Goodson against Portugal … then up steps Eusebio. A Young Frank Beckenbauer shows that it wasn’t just Bobby Moore who could run the show whilst ‘smoking a cigar.’ The Argentinians and Mr Rattin … say no more!!

On holiday at Hemsby near Great Yarmouth in a chalet with my parents,I was nine. Fortunately there was a small black and white TV in the chalet. There’s some people on the pitch, they think it’s all over,it is now.
