Can’t work out what outrages me more: that terrible offering from Stockport or the use of the word “footy”.

    What do you prefer, ‘soccer’?

Yes, soccer is fine, footy sets me teeth on edge. It’s the sort of word I’d expect Tim Lovejoy types to use, or the sort of people who say “I don’t really like football but you’ve got to watch the world cup, haven’t you?”, or Chelsea fans.

    Anyway, Merry Christmas!

Blimey, a lot of things in the UK and world enrage me at present but the use of ‘footy’ is way down the list! Besides, it’s what we always said growing up in Scunny if we were planning a kick about or off to the OSG, so not gonna be changing now! Merry Christmas to you too 😘

Soccer has only become used more widely as a term to describe football ( footy ) because they call that oval shaped ball carrying game that they play dressed in body padding and helmets in America ” football “. Football came about because it’s a game primarily played with the feet, how American football can be described as such has always amused me but of course when America says something the rest of the world seem to obligingly fall into line. Personally I think when Americans refer to football as soccer during discussions or during commentary they should be told to either call the game football or shut TFUp. Button it Yanks. 😂

Me and ‘our kid’ were always telling ‘me mum’ that we were off to play ‘footie.’If I’d said off to play’soccer’there would have been raised eyebrows … then scornful laughter … and then, maybe, violence.

Been playing it, watching it and suffering for it for over 60 years. Never has been and never will be soccer.

    “Off to rugger practice”.

Is there a more middle class phrase?

    Only Catholic trainee priests.

” Off to *ugger practice ”

    Sounds like ” rugger “.

Soccer is the old English word for it – a shortened form of “Association Soccer” – it’s far more British than American.

Blimey, a lot of things in the UK and world enrage me at present but the use of ‘footy’ is way down the list!

It’s far easier and funnier to be outraged about these inconsequential things than the actual problems of our country & world!

Which is the more appropriate term, ” soccer thug ” or ” football hooligan “?

Depends who you’re talking to? But I’m not so much defending soccer as criticising “footy”. I mean “footy thug” is the sort of thing the Sun would come out with, surely that’s a winning argument?

    ‘Luxury!!!’

Luxury indeed!! I’ve never publicly talked about this … but some folk don’t know they’re born! We used to get up a good hour before we went to bed and work a 26 hour day down Dawes Lane licking rust off pylons .. AND we had to pay for the privilege! When we got home .. after walking back to Ashby via Kirton in us bare feet delivering rancid donkey carcasses to the school meal factory .. we were allowed a bit of ‘footie time’. Them was t’days. But it made me what I am today!!

Togger was knocking about when I was a kid in the sixties and we used it occasionally but when my mates came round it was usually ” are you coming out for a game of footie ” or even ” a kick about “. Honestly, hardly ever heard football referred too as soccer, must be an age thing but I know the Yanks always use it, that’s enough for me to rule it out.

I would class Awaywego as a football hooligan when he yabbers on about him chasing aggro for aggro’s sake in his youth at football matches. Probably refer to the current owner as a soccer thug.
