Kevin Maguire football financial expert has tweeted about Ernest Pawns gambling addiction and the court papers about both his addiction and debts.

Bit long but well worth the read.

A very sad tale – the gambling industry is a parasite and needs to be much more tightly regulated.

His gambling addiction is shocking but it’s not something I’ll use to beat him up with; I just want his ties with Scunthorpe United completely severed and we can move on.

If that means us going bust and reforming, then so be it.

    An interesting read.
Only one thing worse that betting and losing your money – betting & losing massive amounts on credit.
He needs help for his addiction.
So many questions will arise from this.
    End of the line.
End of the club in its current guise.
Staff must be frantic with worry that they will not get paid at the end of December.
Administration looks even more likely – unless Mrs Swann props up the club.
A buyer will see us as tainted goods – its going to be difficult to move it on for ‘market value’.
Coolsilk Racing – as I’ve said before, thoroughbreds ain’t cheap.
Is the hotel in Blackpool making any money?
I feel sorry for the office / operations type staff on normal wages.
Maybe he’ll sell it off cheap in order for a bit of sanctuary?

If he hasn’t already done so he needs to get in touch with someone like Tony Adams.

You are joking. It’s years behind and still not finished.
Think this latest revelation re Mr Swann spells the end for any takeover and our Football Club.

You could feel sorry for him if he tried to do the decent thing. He isn’t, he is still refusing to take any responsibility. He has killed a club, Scunthorpe history and some of those at the club may struggle to pay mortgages or worse around a time of year they have to put brave fronts on for family not knowing whether they will get paid. None of us know where he was getting the money from to feed this habit. He is blaming a shady bookkeeper for allowing this but still refuses to front up to fans and come clean. Elliot and co need to buy SUFC for a pound and let him have the land use the money to start again. Him and his like care nothing about the average fan (we’re morons don’t forget).

“He is still refusing to take any responsibility”

Never a truer word written, the man racks up huge gambling debts on the never never without ever seeing the terms and conditions, doesn’t know there is a self exclusion clause, then finds out he has been set-up and deliberately targeted as a mug, by a man with prison form who is trying to work out how much commission he should have made out of Ernest.

Ernest then breaks the golden gamblers rule of not chasing debts, oh dear he also bet on credit. Ernest has also paid out vast amounts of money to cover the debts he racked up but never questioned them, bet on anything that moved, and didn’t realise that at any time he could actually say no!

I hope Mr Sharp makes a film of this, with Chris Fairbrass and Vinny Jones as the Apollo people with Ernest played by Jonny Vegas or Matt Lucas. With all the film profits going to buy our football club.

As an aside I hope that a fellow Iron from the legal profession can turn the tables and use Ernest’s legal tactics and claims against the man himself!

One should feel sorry for him after all it is a mental illness.

Don’t like to see any addictions whether it be drugs, nicotine, alcohol or gambling, nor do I like to see people being conned.

Nor do I like to see people turn up to work not knowing if they will be paid that month or even have a job the month after.

Nor do I like to see injustice, especially against the ‘little man’ by the ‘big man’.

Nor do I like liars and thieves.

He also got sucked in by our local authority and it’s Lincolnshire Lakes Project. (All gone quiet over there).
Good news though, we’re gonna get another roundabout on the M181.

It is popular in some quarters to abrogate all personal responsibility from addicts by using the word ‘illness’ which is dangerously incorrect.
The fact that some people have a much greater propensity for self-harm via addictions is not in dispute, however. It may not sound much different – but it truly is.
In all forms of addiction, sufferers have to ‘own their problem’ before they can eventually beat it.
I have considerable experience over years in dealing with people who are addicts of one form or another.
At the moment, I work closely alongside the CAB whilst attached to fronting a foodbank. Addicts are heavily represented amongst our customers. Just one situation amongst many where I have had experience trying to help addicts over years.
They need: love, encouragement, warmth, advice, practical help, referrals but the one thing I refuse to do is utter the deadly words “You are not to blame.”
I talk in depth with many over a year. I can’t think of a single person who is prepared to share their problem who does not admit that, in the end, they are the ones who have to tackle it.
The ones who do not/will not “own their addictions” are the ones who, generally, tumble into the abyss.
    So very tragic.

Well, this explains a great deal.

I’ve never been able to understand how Swann could take the club from the verge of the Championship to where we are now, even with the problems created by the pandemic. This provides a lot of answers.

It is, indeed, a very sad story. Not only for Swann but also for his family and, of course, for us, the club’s supporters. There are no winners here.

I guess the FA will investigate the markets he gambled on to see if it infringes their rules?

Didn’t take him long to issue a statement about this (OWS) Just a shame a statement regarding the sale seems to be taking a little longer.

Ernest has a statement out justifying it is not his fault he was vulnerable, right then Ernest OUR club is vulnerable and has been exploited at a difficult time in its life, and still is being.

As you wish to take a stand against injustice, sell up to Messer’s Sharp and Elliot and end a massive exploitation of a good few thousand (was a few more at one time) and ease their exploitation and sense of injustice.

Once you are gone you will have all the respect you crave and will be seldom mentioned nor cared about. You will to satisfy your immense ego however hold a very special niche in the history of Scunthorpe United FC.

Should the story ever be told on screen I doubt there will be any need for a comedian, nothing remotely funny to be acted out.

I know it’s Xmas and peace on earth goodwill to all men and all that but I don’t feel sorry for Swann. That may sound harsh to some but everytime I read a story about him or the state of our club I just get more bloody angry. How the hell has it all come to this, Steve Wharton must despair as do the rest of us I imagine.
