I was old enough to go to the pub and celebrate, in fact my dad got drunk.

I went to Hillsborough to watch Argentina play Switzerland and West Germany play Uruguay, paid on the gate to watch Argentina and bought a ticket that same night to watch Germany, and didn’t have to queue.

I can’t remember but doubt it, I can only remember getting drunk once and I said never again, I used to like a beer but knew my limitations.

The only match my wife and I have ever watched together on TV. After 56 years of married life, football remains a bone of contention between us; but we have both survived.

Let’s hope it’s the second for us oldies, and the greatest for our children and grandchildren. Didn’t think I would be excited but I am, just can’t help it.

Watched at home recovering from jaundice. Had missed the last two weeks of school and the Mexico game as I was completely out of it.

Recuperated with a fortnight at Butlins, Bognor Regis! We’d gone upmarket from Skeggy by then 😂

The final, Weber last minute equaliser, Alan Ball played well, the 2 Hurst goals in extra time and Bobby Stiles celebrating.
