What are your expectations? England don’t seem to be a very cohesive unit (something we’re used to at Scunny) so my expectations are not very high.
Not sure of Scotland and Wales.
Or will the dreaded virus completely ruin the show?

Low expectations for England. No matter how talented the players are, every tournament they seem to bottle it at some point. Semi-finals should be realistic though. Scotland are good to watch and a good unit but it’s a lot to ask for them to qualify from the group.
Hope I’m wrong. Wales have a tough group but you never know with Bale on form at the moment. I think quarter finals would be an achievement. Hope they go further.

You day low expectation DM but semi final should be realistic, when did we last reach a Euro Semi Final?. 1996 to be exact so another Semi Final after 24/25 years would be a modern time improvement, I think they could make the final this time. The rest of the home nations will struggle IMO, France to win it for me, if we meet them we will be toast.

I think Belgium will win it personally. Last competition for Martinez managing the Belgium side so they’ll go all out to win it for him.

Fantastic squad of players too. I think they will pull it off.

England to make the final, Wales to finish bottom of their group, Scotland to find some extraordinarily unlucky way not to make it out of the group.

You can be certain Scotland will be coming home early with some hard luck story craving the nation’s sympathy. Was it ever thus.

    Not with Southgate as coach.

It was like a typical Scunny derby game. Scotland fired up and ready for it and England far too timid and cautious. Do we need both Rice and Phillips?

It was a very turgid performance and no we don’t need both Rice and Phillips.

Southgate is very cautious and is playing them in preparation for when we have to play, defend and probably lose to one of the top teams. Like Eric Dier, not sure at all about Rice.

Kane yet again looks unfit at a major tournament.

How can the 4th ranked team in world football ( yes it’s funny but apparently true ) fail to beat the 44th ranked team at Wembley. We’ll it’s easy, play two defensive midfielders and keep passing side to side and backwards, oh and don’t bring on your most talented player till the last half hour whilst leaving both your defensive midfielders on. It’s so bloody frustrating watching a bunch of very talented players played in this way, just take the bloody shackles off them Southgate and let them play. Oh and Kane should not be playing because he clearly is not fit, play the Everton lad up top instead.

Not sure about Calvert Lewin I-A. He didn’t impress in his last 4 or 5 games back from injury but neither did Kane. I’d keep Kane in but take Rice out for another attacking midfielder. Maybe start Grealish. Playing Foden on the right wing isn’t working. Not his usual position for City. Southgate needs a rethink quick. Shaw, not convinced. Think he’s overrated tbh. Thought that most the season. Can’t blame Southgate for keeping pretty much the same team but 2 defensive midfielders against Scotland? Always a potential side and back passing scenario waiting to happen.

Slothgate is an FA yes man. Poor manager at best.
Tactics are stereotypical English play they will win nothing.

Players too busy on social media, and generally doing everything bar from not playing football.

England 4th in the world? Or in Europe? How on earth is this calculated? I’d safely rank them behind Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France…. and maybe more. Maybe even behind Scotland after last night’s showing.

Our squad is no worse than Italy, Spain or Netherlands. Whether we have the staff to utilise it is another matter.

Spain looked poor against a bad Sweden side.

Got to agree with much of the above, almost like watching The Iron. One shot on target, pedestrian build up and a large percentage of passes backwards. They just don’t give the ball away as much as we do.
Phillips deserves a 3 match ban for that haircut!

Disagree. They are set up to match continental sides.

England don’t often concede these days, but despite filling their boots against the likes of Bulgaria, Kosovo, San Marino and Montenegro struggle to find the net against the better nations.

With this young talent we keep hearing about we should do better.

Easily the best game I’ve seen was Holland Vs Ukraine. Both teams were impressive.
I’m afraid England are a bit clueless in the final third, they just seem to come to a full stop.
    Things can change, remember 1966.

It needs to change but the attacking options are a problem. Kane’s not been right since the last injury, Calvert Lewin hasn’t been on form since injury, Sterling couldn’t get much of a look in at City due to form, Rashford looked like he was struggling last month of the season, Foden’s out of position on the right. It doesn’t bode well.

The full backs for England were poor compared to the Scots, too few runs forward, James always looking behind rather than forward.

Before the tournament the questions were about Alexander Arnold’s form and Southgate left him out. Not sure what questions Southgate was asking because the stats from the last 2 years provide all the answers for him.

    AA, 74 games, 6 goals, 20 assists
    James, 56 games, 1 goal, 4 assists.

    Then we have Rice,

70 games, 3 goals, 4 assists from midfield.

It’s clear what Southgate’s priorities are. Hopefully now I’ve posted this they will go on to win the Euros!!

Tonights match between Germany and Belgium was how football used to be played, thrilling from kick off till the final whistle, a real credit to both teams. When you watch England play, it reminds me of the style applied at Scunthorpe, 110% concentration on defence, boring side and back passing throughout, no interest in attack, and that James full back is the most pathetic fullback ever to play for England, not one forward pass during the full game, Southgate is a poor manager, but obviously a yes man to the league bosses and fully deserved the booing at half time and full time. And how pathetic have things come to when a recording of crowd cheering was played of the vanoy system in order to drown the booing when the players continue to Take the Knee as they insist on being the only team to continue doing the waste of time activity that many supporters do not agree with.

Busy night for Germany as they had a cracking performance against Portugal as well.

They were poor and fairly cautious against France but look a different side with the handbrake off. Hopefully England will start to try and win games from here on in rather than try to not lose them.

Surprisingly, Italy are the only team to approach their first 2 games with the confidence to just go out and beat what is in front of them. They have been a joy to watch. Theye can now give their back up players a game against Wales if they want to.

The Germany v Portugal match last night was the best game I’ve seen so far in this tournament, lots of good attacking play from both sides and plenty of defensive mistakes being exposed as a result. The Germans certainly did look like the Germans of old and Portugal appear to be the best counter attacking side in the tournament when facing such good opposition. Cracking stuff, more please.

Not a big fan of Southgate at all but to be fair he picked Trent who then withdrew injured.

He did pick him after he faced a lot of pressure to do it. Not sure that Southgate was considering him as first choice though because of the reasons stated above.

If we transform into a free flowing attacking team in the next few matches like the other top teams then great. The evidence so far is that is not the plan.

BS – any chance we can keep the taking the knee debate out of this thread and focus on the football? It’s been discussed multiple times before and guess what, we don’t all agree.

Germany haven’t played Belgium. They may have looked good against Portugal but were poor against France (who themselves looked lethargic against Hungary).

that James full back is the most pathetic fullback ever to play for England,

Yet he’s excellent when he plays for Chelsea.

the players continue to Take the Knee as they insist on being the only team to continue doing the waste of time activity that many supporters do not agree with.

Most do agree, and what’s more the players and coaches agree, so stop whinging.

After an initial flourish England dropped back to kind, I still can’t see them progressing much further, lack of confidence or too many out of form.
