Arrived ar ground to be told game is off. Ref made the call at 7:30!!!
WTF!
Amateurish. Unbelievable!
January 23, 2024 at 8:12 pm #279718I booked it with NLN TV at 20 past 7, so now watching Tamworth v Boston rather than waste the money
I’m going to message and ask for a refund tomorrow – as I’m now watching Chezzy v Woking.
Not my team, not what I signed up for.
I’ve got Tamworth v Boston on the tablet.
Seems you can watch as many games as you’ve got devices.
Chesterfield have just gone 1-0 up – good free kick.January 23, 2024 at 8:21 pm #279719Crazy!
Some of the other North East clubs called off much earlier
January 23, 2024 at 8:49 pm #279723And Tamworth fans were moaning because we called their game off in plenty of time, so that there was no risk of a wasted journey.
This should be a lesson for those who see conspiracies. Incompetence is a more likely culprit.

January 23, 2024 at 9:12 pm #279726I see this strange one is rubbing it in. A history of trying to wind up supporters of most clubs. Very odd indeed
Hahahahahahahahahahah fantastic. Made my week that has, let’s hope the roads are slippery

That too, but 15 minutes for notice is poor.
January 23, 2024 at 9:20 pm #279730They clearly tried to get a game on,this should happen more

And Aidan Wilkinson Jr is gobbling off on the same platform – is he still involved with the club?
January 23, 2024 at 9:29 pm #279732So you believe no one set foot on the turf until 7:15?
Give over!
Weather was better than at 3:15 when Gateshead’s game was called off.
January 23, 2024 at 9:42 pm #279733Ref would have probably arrived at the ‘ground’ about 6:30 to 6:45.
If it was waterlogged, why didn’t she call it off upon her arrival?January 23, 2024 at 11:04 pm #279735Why didn’t a club official or local referee/FA representative have a look at 16:00?

It’s not rocket science is it. Their fans don’t seem impressed either

The Heed cancelled at 3:30pm. Shields and Spartans both went ahead!
No real logic there!
January 23, 2024 at 11:45 pm #279739Newton Aycliffe played tonight ffs!

January 23, 2024 at 11:59 pm #279741Thanks NI. That sheds more light. Sometimes there’s no one actually to blame. Just a pity for the travelling support.

Those lads & lasses deserve medals.
January 24, 2024 at 7:06 am #279749Conflicting reports from Iron supporter’s who made the trip, particularly some who spoke to Dean, Turnball, stewards and Darlo’s keeper. Sounds like both managers wanted the ref to reconsider playing it after the rain had stopped but projected weather was an issue, or she said it was too late to change the decision. Done now anyway. Frustrating trip back for all those that made the trip. I blame climate change.
January 24, 2024 at 7:24 am #279750I blame climate change
I blame the ref. Who said women weren’t indecisive ?
On a more serious note, that was a complete joke waiting all that time to call it off.
January 24, 2024 at 9:16 am #279757Easy blaming officials from behind a keyboard, our own experience with the Buxton home game this season and how quickly conditions changed there should make us all realise that sometimes, shit happens.
January 24, 2024 at 9:36 am #279762Due to climate change, yes.
January 24, 2024 at 9:42 am #279763I had been watching both the SUFC & DFC websites all afternoon. I’d also been studying the weather apps.
The heavy rain was due to clear the NE around 18:00. The wind was still a problem but if anything that would help dry out the pitch.
As others will confirm at the time most fans were arriving it was just light drizzle.
Therefore I find it hard to believe that the pitch was in a worse condition at 19:15 than it was at 18:00! And it would have been far worse at 16:00 when it was hammering it down.
When the stewards told us it was off our first thought was structural damage until he said it was standing water.
From the Darlo report it sounds like the managers and players didn’t fancy it either. The conspiracy theories continue!!!
By the time his three match ban is over Whitehall will have forgotten what a football looks like!
January 24, 2024 at 9:59 am #279764I must say it was a strange one, we arrived at the ground about an hour before kick off and the rain was steady but not torrential, it looked a lot worse than it was because the wind made it horizontal but the actual amount of rain coming down wasn’t too bad.
The way the stadium is laid out you enter the away end on one side of the ground near the corner flag and the seating is on the other side of the pitch so we walked almost half way round the pitch via the away end and no part of it was waterlogged and there were no signs of standing water. Players were warming up across the entire pitch (our keeper even occupying the supposed problematic centre circle for kicking practice with Fitz), the Darlo players were doing some pass and move drills down in front of us and the pitch looked fine, it was cutting up a bit but the ball was travelling without any issue, our players were doing the same in the opposite corner.
To be honest at no point did we or anyone around us have any inkling that the game was in doubt so when someone said it was off I actually thought they were joking, by this time the rain had stopped, the skies were clear of cloud and the forecast was getting better.
I’m no expert and I’m not saying there wasn’t water somewhere on the pitch but based on what we saw it must have been confined to a pretty small area of the pitch which perhaps could’ve been dealt with especially with no more rain coming down?
Anyway it can’t be helped and I’m sure the decision was taken in good faith but I’ve never experienced anything quite like it.1 user thanked author for this post.

January 24, 2024 at 12:40 pm #279782My son reckons they wanted to get the clubhouse full of punters buying food and drinks before calling it off!
