With a botched coronavirus response and exams fiasco why are we remotely concerned about the singing of Rule Britannia, when this is a non-story? No-one was calling for it to be removed, the BBC have made no indication that the removal of lyrics (originally it was being talked about as if it was gone entirely) has anything to do with offending minorities, and seems to be a cultural response to the pandemic with smaller orchestras and no audience.
However, those who aren’t racist and have ‘legitimate concerns,’ like Farage, are trying to accuse the BBC of pandering to a minority when that minority have made no calls for it to be changed in any way.August 26, 2020 at 12:34 pm #193956Iron-aweParticipantOffline

Johnson was all over it like a rash yesterday and why?, nice distraction away from the serious stuff that his government keep messing up. Auntie Beeb has already said it will be back to normal next year when hopefully we have a more normal situation throughout the country. As for Culture Wars, I prefer Robot Wars, can’t beat a bit of top class robot kicking, hope that returns one day.August 26, 2020 at 12:54 pm #193961
Boris lost any of his small bit of credibility when he was lecturing parents at the weekend about morals and doing the right thing for their children.
He has left the mother of every one of his children (those that have been identified as his) apart from the latest. And if the rumours about press gagging orders and the 28 year old violinist have any truth, how long will his latest “happy family’ last?
Who was kipping and trespassing in the tent? Was it the kipper Farage or the other kipper Johnson?August 26, 2020 at 1:12 pm #193967
Here’s an alternative cultural song that also pays homage to our historical roots. Added bonus that it was sung by a political leader.
Is this also acceptable? Very different times!August 26, 2020 at 1:28 pm #193970
Johnson and Cummings are very good at whataboutery. Shame they’re useless at running the countryAugust 26, 2020 at 2:31 pm #193978
Their whataboutery is clearly to pull the chains of the angry white men and women in the country. They do it because it works as Trump has shown.
But they are also pissing off a lot of their own voters, MPs and councillors with their incompetence and non-inclusive way of doing things.August 26, 2020 at 8:05 pm #193992

I think the government needs to keep its neck out of media decisions.
I don’t think there are any plans for more Robot Wars, but if that floats your boat the American Battlebots series is still ongoing.August 26, 2020 at 9:42 pm #194001
‘But they are also pissing off a lot of their own voters, MPs and councillors with their incompetence and non-inclusive way of doing things.’
Aye, but it matters not a jot to them Heath. At the risk of repeating what I said on another thread, they’ve still got 4 years to deregulate and weaken the state and bleed the country dry before they disappear. In their grand scheme of things they and the people they are interested in are well ahead of the game and raking it in, be it from dodgy contracts or investments. Brexit will further increase the wealth for a select few. The mugging will continue because they’re on the way to complete control. Covid has actually benefitted the juggernaut. Who’d have thunk it?August 26, 2020 at 9:47 pm #194002
The amount of coverage in the press the Proms has had today in a blatant and successful attempt to divert attention from what’s really going on is nothing short of sick.August 26, 2020 at 11:45 pm #194006
Totally agree with you. Only way to stop it happening is for the Tory MPs to fight back. Little chance I know, and he got rid of most of the clever ones before the last election.
Starmer needs to step up and demand enquiries into contacts for mates. Doubt he will though, as he seems to be playing a long game, fingers crossed that the people will make their own minds up. Not likely to happen given the desire for more of Johnson’s dead cats and whataboutery!August 29, 2020 at 9:45 am #194077
More culture war nonsense expertly debunked by The Secret Barrister:
Gutter journalism. #FakeLaw by The Sun and The Mail.
A truly vile exploitation of a grieving widow to make dishonest and intellectually void attacks on legal aid and the rule of law.
Here’s why it’s nonsense:

Also spotted the Littlejohn headline “One person working from home is another’s P45”.
So this week Johnson will be “guilt tripping” workers like me who work from home. At the same time Hancock is warning about the possibility of second national lockdown following a report warning about 81 million possible deaths over the winter. Johnson (or Cummings) will now probably sack Hancock.
The number of General Haigh types telling workers it’s safe to go back from the comfort of THEIR own homes is growing. Shapps (Michael Green), IDS, Johnson, Mogadon Sharma and now we have the prick Littlejohn.
Shapps tells us that he is getting rail and bus services back to normal, but he can’t explain how a packed underground train at rush hour will be safe.
Get back to work, your country needs you! Thankfully many employers who value their staff will ignore this nonsense. Sadly many won’t.August 29, 2020 at 12:13 pm #194085
