…each to write out one thousand times:

“Trying to sit on a lead is NOT a good way of winning a football match”.

That way, we might actually stop this lunacy and WIN A FEW GAMES.

I could also add that they need to learn, as, apparently do our players, that a match isn’t over until the final fekking whistle!!!!

Must all think they are on the works and can clock off early…😄😄😄

We didn’t try to sit on a lead today.

We’re a) not fit enough and b) don’t have an outlet up front.

If its a fitness issue then it’s a management issue, with the army of coaches and analysts it’s shambolic if at this point of the season the players aren’t fit enough, excepting the odd loanee.

Some people can only do what they are allowed to do.
Some can only make suggestions if they are advised they can !!

Playing a high tempo, pressing game for 90 minutes plus added time can be hugely successful, especially in the lower leagues where players are more prone to make mistakes when put under pressure. The big challenge though is that it does require a huge level of fitness from the players, and intelligent use of substitutions to ensure the most fatigued players are replaced in a timely manner.

Whilst it can be successful (as we saw in the first half of the match), unless you have a team of super fit athletes it is almost impossible to play like that for the whole match (as we saw in the second half). To add to that, the cumulative fatigue of playing in such a way week after week will likely lead to a huge slump in performance after a month or so.

If you are to play a pressing / high tempo tactic match after match you will need a big squad of fit athletes so you can rotate them to keep the all fresh. And this is the challenge for us.

    Exactly that Daz.

You also need players who can hold the ball to give the rest a breather, and an on the pitch leader who can direct play.

    On Saturday we had neither.

Only 1 person can make that decision and sadly a change of plan other than targetting is not forthcoming.

They are supposed to be professional athletes some of them paid thousands a week and are playing one game a week, it’s early in the season how on earth can they be unfit or fatigued.
If this is the reason for the current performances and fading away in the latter stages of a game it is truely shocking.

We seem to have an ongoing problem getting players fit and then keeping them fit. Season barely started and we’ve had/got unavailable:-
Billson, Millen, Davis, Thompson, Kenyon, Bunn, Hallam, Jarvis, Loft, O’Neill & Collins. Plus some I might have missed and Perry & Scrimshaw (possibly) isolating.
Add to that the 3 or 4 (or more) not good enough, 2 or 3 not quite ready and squad rotation is almost impossible without significantly weakening the starting 11

They are supposed to be professional athletes some of them paid thousands a week and are playing one game a week, it’s early in the season how on earth can they be unfit or fatigued.

Unfortunately human physiology is not affected by the remuneration of any athlete. It is a complex process of overload / recovery, and there are many other factors that feed into this (think nutrition, sleep, rest, mobility, training age, chronological age, cognitive ability and much more).

Players don’t just play one game per week, they also have training on other ‘non-match’ days, and if you factor in cup matches, and fixture congestions, they will likely be playing two matches a week on a regular basis.

When you have a small squad it is almost inevitable that the team will have to manage fatigue levels of the athletes, and this will be impacted to a greater extent if you try to play a high tempo, pressing game.

An upmarket version of our Carlisle tactics worked a treat for Spurs yesterday in the first half but they couldn’t sustain it either.

Only way to get a breather in football is to keep the football for longer periods which has the added advantage of working and tiring the opposition.

If only we could do it.

The top German coaches e.g. Klopp and Tuchel seem to have the knack of getting teams to play in waves of high intensity pressing interspersed with periods of keep ball to get your breath back.

Maybe if Neil could learn a bit of German or perhaps finally a useful role for KDT as a translator when he comes back from Stockport to get his latest injury fixed.

“schnell gehen” with a little bit of “bleib am Ball”

Ultimately, do we have the players to deliver on any system effectively? I see a bucket load of effort on the whole, which I appreciate, but also a chasm in terms of football league class. How many of our side would get into a top half National League side? I don’t think we’d lose too many to those clubs if we made the squad available for free transfer (sadly…)

I do wonder about the recruitment too. I just don’t think many managers would get a fine tune out of this group of players. I will be delighted to be proven wrong and I hope I have a massive portion of humble pie to eat soon!

The new Barnet manager was today sacked after 7 matches because of poor results, whilst our lot have now had 50 matches last season, and 10 matches this season, but still keep aimlessly plod along at the foot of league 2, when, when, when will they get the call to visit the Chairmans office for a short talk and their P45s ????

    Good points raised by MLF.

The fact that James Horsefield was a sub for Chester at Darlington in the FA Cup qualifying on Saturday tells you much about the type of players we have recruited in the past three or four seasons.

If we had a Baraclough in CM and a Torpey like big n’ nasty targetman we could get away with it. Jarvis did really well and would continue to do well in a 2 upfront. What we need though to play like this is a big nasty battering ram who can hold the ball up.

O’Neil, jesus christ…he looks like another in the Turan bracket. I’d send him out on loan In January and get a loan striker in…he looks terrible.

Don’t get me started on Beestin…who did he think he was trying that, Pirlo ?

    What a plonker !
