Tell you what, best I’ve heard from him. Brutally honest. Openly admitted some players just aren’t good enough and hinted some quite frankly can’t be bothered “which we’ve known for a long time”
Said in so many words that he told the team to sit in and play on the counter because he doesn’t really trust them to play any other way.
Cox said now he’s given them more freedom in their movement in the formation the poorer they are for it.
Also a few of them didn’t read the information put together by the management team and as a result made mistakes which led to goals.
You could tell he was absolutely fuming. Also said one player was gave a proper dressing down at the end..even Karacan lost his rag with them as well and told them some home truths.
If you haven’t listened to it yet, get it listened to.

You have to have a bbc account though to listen to it.

They can read?
April 13, 2021 at 9:49 pm #204726It sou ded like they were sent videos to watch and didn’t AND it wasn’t the first time it’s happened, seems they didn’t know club can see if they looked at them.
Seems like some of them really aren’t that intelligent1 user thanked author for this post.
April 13, 2021 at 10:22 pm #204729Sounds like a complete and utter shambles on and off the field.
Seems like some players take no notice of what he wants !
Showed his lack of experience by being interviewed whilst still angry.
Don’t think after this outburst it will improve things as most of them won’t be here next season anyway.April 13, 2021 at 10:38 pm #204730One of them clearly lied out watching it thinking the internet will keep that little secret.
There were clues about the identity, The person in question let his man score I reckon it is one of two defensive players, Jem ruled out as well.
April 13, 2021 at 10:46 pm #204731Excellent a manager who is honest and decent.
Just confirms what we all know or suspect about the playing squad.
One small point why did the coaching staff trust the players to do the work when some had prevoiusly not bothered?
And why not question them as individuals to find out if they had indeed watched the video and understood what they were meant to be learning?

April 14, 2021 at 12:16 am #204734And why not question them as individuals to find out if they had indeed watched the video and understood what they were meant to be learning?
The main culprit was asked about the video and whether they watched it and they lied to him and everybody else so he definitely asked but as I said, he was clearly lied to about it.
Whoever it was never expected to be found out so obviously lied thinking nobody would know but Cox found out and gave him a complete dressing down.
Not the first time it’s happened either so he/they need to get moved on.
Not Karacan and won’t be Taft either as he hasn’t been here long enough…so it can really only be one who’s been acting unprofessionally.
Cox said the player in question was left out before for not bothering to look at the information.
Cox really doesn’t trust this squad. I can’t say I blame him to be honest.
Maybe I was a bit harsh on Cox on reflection. I always knew the squad was questionable but not as unprofessional as this.
April 14, 2021 at 12:39 am #204737Little snippet for those who haven’t listened yet
"They've not only been unprofessional, they've been poor in the match and I'm absolutely raging with them and I've let them have it"

April 14, 2021 at 4:12 am #204738Am now so looking forward to the date when we find out who has been axed.
I try SO very hard to defend the players. I never throw brickbats at anybody until it becomes absolutely essential.
It is now absolutely essential.April 14, 2021 at 7:00 am #204739Sounds like a complete and utter shambles on and off the field.
Seems like some players take no notice of what he wants !

Don’t think after this outburst it will improve things as most of them won’t be here next season anyway.I thought it was a brilliant interview; refreshingly honest and confirms what most of us know.
They players in general aren’t good enough and every time he tries to give them some freedom we get punished, hence the defensive/counter attacking football.
A few of them are in for a rude awakening when contracts expire.

April 14, 2021 at 8:57 am #204741The Karacan interview was very informative. Defended the manager but did question our recruitment that the delivered the majority of what arrived.
That simply are not good enough, although Cox wanted Hippolyte !! Noses need putting out of joint – it isn’t too late.

Throwing a plate of sandwiches usually works doesn’t it?

April 14, 2021 at 9:18 am #204747Are there signs that he is learning?
“Scunthorpe United boss Neil Cox has accused his players of not being good enough, and has questioned whether some of them even care about playing.”
Well done Neil but a lot of people had realised this well before Christmas!
” went on to slam his players for what he perceived as them being “unprofessional” and “naïve”. – correct.
“When we get to the final third, we’ve been poor” – correct again.
“They don’t know what they’re doing” – right again.
““I don’t think they’re good enough at times to be honest. That’s probably the big thing.” – No argument there.
But just when you think he’s finally getting to grips with the situation he gets delusional again:-“We’ve done really well this year by sitting in and playing counter-attacking football” – WHAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!
If he thinks that then we might have a big problem in the future.1 user thanked author for this post.

If he thinks that then we might have a big problem in the future.I disagree. This is a piss-poor squad and to get us to safety long before the end of the season is a great achievement given what he’s got to work with. It’s not been pretty, it has been effective enough to get the job done.
April 14, 2021 at 9:24 am #204751the club needs building around Jem he certainly cares, it’s OK taking the cheap option at the start of a season but it might cost more in January to get away from the bottom than getting a decent team to start with, just need a smaller squad to get costs down.

April 14, 2021 at 9:31 am #204752Completely agree Mick, definition of a false economy.
I’d have Karacan as the captain for next season, he’s had a huge impact on the team since his arrival.

Fair enough to disagree and, don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted we look like surviving in L2. I just think “We’ve done really well” is pushing things just too far. ‘We’ve done OK sometimes’ would have been closer to the truth.
April 14, 2021 at 10:13 am #204756we are about safe but we technically more relying on other teams beating Southend and Grimsby than us getting 5 points on our own.
April 14, 2021 at 10:17 am #204757I know what you mean, I just think it’s easy to forget just how bad we were in the autumn. After that FA Cup game against Solihull, I fully expected us to be in Grimsby’s current position. For me, the bigger issue has been how boring it has been to watch the team. We’re not even averaging a goal a game. Barrow have scored 10 more than us and Oldham have managed 64 despite being crap!
April 14, 2021 at 11:30 am #204759but Cox hasn’t had the faith in our players to play real attacking football so he says.
April 14, 2021 at 11:53 am #204760Yep, which is why it’s been so boring. And you can understand why when you look at how open we were at the back in the early part of this season.
April 14, 2021 at 12:40 pm #204766I think the interview did not show the club, the players, or the management staff in a good light.
That sort of stuff should be done behind closed doors and NOT behind a reporters microphone. To me, it shows Cox’s inexperience as a manager, runs the risk of alienating certain players, and does nothing to bring them inline.
Sure it might be a great soundbite for the fans, but it just makes his overall job as manager of Scunthorpe United that much more challenging.
April 14, 2021 at 12:49 pm #204769Why does honesty make his job more challenging? in my veiw it got some supporters more on side.
April 14, 2021 at 12:53 pm #204770Those players have nothing to offer that the club needs, they dont care and need to be gone today.
April 14, 2021 at 12:57 pm #204771@JCharles – trust me I do have a reasonable understanding of motivating athletes at a high level of sport and, I can tell you that publicly criticising players is counter-productive towards performance improvements.
April 14, 2021 at 1:31 pm #204775Daz – I thought the same, I can only imagine he felt it was the last straw after a series of setbacks and he realises he no longer needs to rely on the players he considers to be a problem?
1 user thanked author for this post.
April 14, 2021 at 1:45 pm #204778Completely disagree. If they decide to piss around and not perform all season and can’t hack the truth they don’t deserve to be here anyway.
These players have all enough babying now. This is the last resort. I wouldn’t call these top end athletes either, if they we’re…. they’d try harder, care and listen more to what they’re been told.
These players have extracted the urine for far too long now. A line needed to be drawn in the sand last night…enough is enough.
If this shocks them into one more win, then fair enough. A lot of these shite bags will be gone anyway,
April 14, 2021 at 2:07 pm #204779Daz, with all due respect they are far from top end athletes and have no motivation to give.
