Well, safe to say that few, if any, of those “playing for contracts” yesterday will be wearing an Iron shirt next season. At least I hope not.
Also, this from JD:- “I thought Carvs did really well”
He barely touched the ball and is injured again, if this is the level of player and performance that satisfies Dean then trusting him with the summer recruitment is asking for trouble.4 users thanked author for this post.
April 16, 2023 at 10:45 am #260065nail on the head time there cass … after the utter dross thats been served up by this group just why some are playing for contracts is head shaking , as ive previously said i would keep max 5 of this current crop (Chappo Elliot Ogle plus 2 of Shrimpton Wilson Butterfireld but he wont stay surely) the rest can buggar off ..Carver n Hallam have to stay to keep the Physio in a job
In the recent interview JD did say how players would be sourced and that he would have the final yes or no …that thought actually is quite scary.

April 16, 2023 at 11:30 am #260068If the players are sourced by (say) Turnbull and JD gets the final yes or no then I’d be happy with that. Giving him alone a free rein to select and sign …… please NOOOOO!!

April 16, 2023 at 11:38 am #260069Is Turnball still around?
April 16, 2023 at 12:22 pm #260071I believe he is in rehearsal for his new acting career. He’s been cast in ‘The Invisible Man’ but it’s a non-speaking role.
April 16, 2023 at 1:26 pm #260077And the players that Turnbull was allowed to bring in this season Cass, are you taking the piss, other than Ogle and Butterfield (and he was probably Hills man) the rest have been dross, Happy with the new regimes Chapman, Everton, Elliot
April 16, 2023 at 3:15 pm #260084If you read my post again you might see that I was using Turnbull as an example. (Anybody but JD alone or Will Swann really) But, as we’re on the subject, which players that you are sure were Turnbull’s choices are you referring to as dross?

Well at least that’s an upgrade on the previous owner, his was a non thinking role when it came to running a football club.
April 16, 2023 at 6:56 pm #260105It’s at times like this that the much maligned recruitment committee doesn’t look like too bad an option!

April 16, 2023 at 8:29 pm #260120I saw last week we’re offering contracts to Sellers flemming, Poulter, Nat Wallace and Robertson from the youths. Out of the current crop I’d keep Wilson, Shrimpton and maybe Ogle. Chapman and Elliot are already tied down for next season but the others can go for me.
Ogle I’m undecided on as gives his all but he’s a more than a bit rash at times and his delivery into the box is shite but he will run his 2 veg off and has the right sort of attitude so he may come in handy.
April 16, 2023 at 11:19 pm #260161Chapman Foster: more than happy with Chapman as number 1 next year. Be surprised if Foster is still here come August though.
Ogle Boyce: Would like to see Richards-Everton offered a new deal, whether he accepts is a different matter. Experienced centre back is a must. O’Malley can go for me and get a new left back in.
Pugh Shrimpton Butterfield Beestin: not happy with this midfield. Confused to why Pugh has a new deal and I think Beestin is one of those who needs a fresh start. Will Butterfield drop to NLN?- I doubt it. Total revamped needed
Elliot Carver: on paper these 2 have both done well at NLN. If he persists with 4-2-3-1 then probably only 1 addition needed.
No news on Wilson, I assume that’s him gone then.
We HAVE to go get our business done early- no excuses. I imagine fitness will play a big part in this league with so many part time. Get a proper pre season in them.
Smaller squad size: using 35 players a season is a good explanation for our current woes. 24/25 is plenty- especially at this level. Use the loan market to cover injuries if necessary but not just to warehouse players.
Do the due diligence on the players: with a smaller squad we need to weed out those who are injury prone; let Hallam be a warning.
Finally, get the right characters in!! We need leaders across the pitch. Players willing to organise and manage a game themselves. Our game management has been so weak for years now.
Over to you Hilton/Dean.

April 17, 2023 at 4:03 am #260164Re signings …. sounds like its Turnbull Nelson Plummer combined with JD having the final yey or ney
Whose to say after the season ends a club wont come in for Nelson as their new manager, pretty sure he would seriously consider any offer of an actual management position and IMO could do a good job NLN NL levels.
Max 5 of this current bunch should stay with most members already pretty much all naming the same names .. alas still gonna have a couple of permacrocs on the books who should be paid off , given away or assassinated.
** Whitehouse needs to be back and playedAgree things need to happen quickly with regard to getting new faces in to give them a proper pre season together plus the later you leave it the more chance you end up with dreggs n left overs.
April 17, 2023 at 9:30 am #260176Just to reply to Cliffs point about O’Malley, he was never a left back IMO but he could slot into left midfield and be a temp left back in an emergency, we might not get as many options as we think about players wanting to come here next season.

April 17, 2023 at 10:46 am #260179Quite right I-a, how attractive is a team apparently in serious decline. We’re less attractive than the last 2 close seasons and we didn’t attract much quality then. We might have to manage our expectations, some PT players will be earning more than they’ll get being FT with us I suspect.

Said the same for years. Look at what he’s good at and what he’s not good at his strengths lines up more with a winger.
Good going forward
Fantastic delivery into the box from crosses and deadball deliveries
Athletic, hard working and gets around the pitchSlack marking
Tends to be Positionally poor e.g Losses his man and get’s dragged out of position
Not the most strongest and can be bullied at timesGood enough defensively though to add cover to a more defensively sound LB. I think he’d flourish on the wing. Another important thing about him is that he doesn’t get injured too often either.
I think we could do a hell of a lot worse then him and plus he’s versatile as he can play in CM at a push too.

No he can’t, he was abysmal when he played there – square pegs!!

Isn’t he a 2nd year next season? Isn’t he already on a pro contract with us?
What sort of money will we get if Hull buy him?April 21, 2023 at 9:08 am #260499Good enough defensively though to add cover to a more defensively sound LB. I think he’d flourish on the wing. Another important thing about him is that he doesn’t get injured too often either.

It’s amazing how often attacking left backs don’t convert into left wingers, probably because the skillsets are more different than people realise. We saw it tried at Scunthorpe with Marcus Williams; we saw it at England with Ashley Cole & Wayne Bridge, it never worked. Running onto an overlap is very different from beating a man from a standing start, for example.

April 21, 2023 at 8:38 pm #260572Never know O’Malley could buck the trend !. You would have thought he’d have enough ability to convert positions at NLN level.

That’s funny because he was solid there when we played Halifax away and won earlier in the season. O’Malley was part of a central midfield 3 though.
April 22, 2023 at 12:09 am #260595He isn’t a left winger, and he isn’t a centre mid. He’s barely impersonated a left back this season.
He’s got a good delivery but then again so did Ross Millen.
April 22, 2023 at 3:04 am #260602in other BIG player news …… taken from SUFC website JDs pre Southend team update, so in true Keystone cops mode ..
“” George Taft has also dropped a dumbbell on his toe and broke it.”

Another Hilton U Turn would see Swann driving the bus again.
