Would agree there’s scope for more crosses in, but not sure we would have been any more a potent and attacking threat as a result though. IMO, it’s the addition of Wreh with Beck, trying Beestin on the right, and whatever else they’ve been working on in training (which doesn’t appear to be crosses in to Beck from the flanks) that’s made a difference. I know some supporters have been arguing for more crosses in but it’s not happening at present and we’ve seen a marked improvement anyway. Would agree we’ve relied on Roberts doing what he’s been doing but I rather think that’s frequently saved us rather than being detrimental.
February 26, 2025 at 5:26 pm #299464I’m a fan of Roberts scoring.

February 26, 2025 at 5:33 pm #299465He was a very grumpy young man when he came off last night.
February 26, 2025 at 6:06 pm #299467Yeah he did look a bit cranky when he came off , he’s usually subbed before then maybe he thought he’d played too long and would require more beauty sleep last night, either way he’ll be fine, we will miss him when he’s gone though.
February 26, 2025 at 6:14 pm #299469Maybe he thought we weren’t playing to his strengths?
February 26, 2025 at 6:33 pm #299470I’m guessing but my take it was more that Cass than coming off in the 88th minute of a game that was clearly won.
February 26, 2025 at 6:53 pm #299472Frustrated that he hadn’t had his best game? Frustrated he had less influence than usual?
February 26, 2025 at 7:14 pm #299475I haven’t seen many games recently, only highlights. How does Beck do at corners because that’s a dead ball cross into the box situation – is he a threat at these or does the number of defenders around him nullify it? Roberts cutting in may irritate some but it’s been quite successful this season, putting the part time full back on his weaker foot gives him a very good advantage

Exactly what i thought at the time Cass when saw him subbed on Iornarmy YT Vid .. was arsey cos played out of position / different position to accommodate Wreh and less chance of scoring ..he obviously thrives on goals and maybe has his eye on the Golden boot (or flip flop such is the pitch)now Whall gonna be missing … good for the CV and his next move.
Also it was one of his less effective non prominent games so probably frustrated as mentioned after all he is the star of the show in most outings.
February 27, 2025 at 5:17 am #299482I’m not making any points at all regarding Roberts – it’s just that, as a team, there has been an insufficiency of crosses.
Brought up on football in the 60s and 70s, I remember a time when crosses went beyond the GK almost every time – and the exceptions were usually at the near post. Remember the terror caused to many defenders when Nolan Keeley covered the near post? – Little back flicks caused chaos. Of course, you needed a corner taker who was pretty accurate.
Ball after ball down the GK’s throat? – Nope.
There were usually one or two big lads about 8 yards beyond the far post who ran in at speed to meet crosses. GKs had a much tougher time back then.
When your last man is level with the keeper’s far post – obviously, crosses are made which attempt to pick out that man. It’s a recipe for giving possession back to the defence.
The flight of that ball gives the GK a chance to pluck it out of the air on far too regular a basis.
It wasn’t so much that GKs were no good at catching crosses back in the day but just that they weren’t fed them over and over again.
Big lads rampaging from the area beyond the far post in order to meet crosses on their forehead frightened defences – and keepers – far more than I have seen in decades.
Ernie Moss never played for us but I remember him fondly.1 user thanked author for this post.
February 27, 2025 at 8:56 am #299485I remember Dave Bamber less fondly.
More recently Matt Smith, the scorer of an unforgettable double (GK) against us.February 27, 2025 at 12:53 pm #299487The sound of swathes of old timers on the verge of orgasm every time the ball got lumped down near the corner flag, in anticipation of a decent cross, was a carry over from the OSG days to GP. A corner would have grown men reaching for the Kleenex.
February 27, 2025 at 2:22 pm #299491It was far better to watch ,it forced us to be wider and helped Beck who’s been somewhat thrown under a bus .It just looked more like a team you like to watch and Roberts is a good player so will adapt .

February 27, 2025 at 2:44 pm #299492A good wide man can do both, ie put in a telling cross or cut inside.
But we’re in NLN so perhaps we shouldn’t be expecting too much.
Having said that there are PL internationals who find the skill difficult to master (Saka & Grealish eg).
Perhaps it’s down to coaching?
February 27, 2025 at 3:05 pm #299493I’d expect any PL player on PL wages to be fully two footed but few are.
NLN – maybe not but Butterfield was a great advert for it.
Coaching should be easy – ” take that ball and kick it with your wrong foot for half an hour every day.”February 27, 2025 at 3:24 pm #299494‘then practice whacking it in between those jumpers for goalposts for a bit…’
February 27, 2025 at 3:45 pm #299495That’s level 2, I was keeping it simple.

February 27, 2025 at 6:05 pm #299498Alfie B can give it a good whack with either foot and his close control in tight situations is excellent.
March 12, 2025 at 6:58 am #299830Not even on bench last night.
Is he injured / ill?
I stopped listening to pre & post game interviews and reading the OWS.March 12, 2025 at 9:19 am #299835Alfie has bruising on the bone I believe AB said, started running but still feels it when he kicks, just wait and see I guess but we were short on forward options on the bench last night with Whitehall and Wreh absent through injury, so hopefully this Saturday he may make the squad.
March 12, 2025 at 9:52 am #299839What’s Wreh’s injury?
March 12, 2025 at 12:20 pm #299857Think AB said Wreh a fatigue injury which I guess translate to too much game time too soon after being out for awhile, which I guess translates too just rest it up, not sure which part of him is fatigued.
March 12, 2025 at 1:20 pm #299862‘Wreh’s fatigue’… in a French accent.
March 12, 2025 at 1:21 pm #299863AB also hinted that because he was out of their 1st team his training was also reduced, so he has been working on that and then the games on top have caught up a little.
But the squad do seem to be coping when issues like this crop up. 9 matches to go Mr Wreh will contribute I have no doubt.
March 12, 2025 at 3:56 pm #299866Whitehall is expected to be back against Chester. Wreh will be ok for Saturday, as will Beestin. Butler said he nearly made it last night, but still felt it a little when kicking the ball.
Wreh is suffering from muscle stiffness “fatigue”.

Pretty sure Butler said Whitehall could be back next Tuesday.
March 17, 2025 at 12:05 am #299956Looked lively if not weighty on his debut, now just looks weighty, and absolutely lost.

I hope we get somebody else in on loan. To be fair, he looked a bit portly.
