Charles Edward STRONG
”Charlie” (Ex-Scunthorpe United Physio) It is with great sadness we announce Charlie passed away peacefully on 21 December 2020, at Scunthorpe General Hospital, aged 98 years.
I hope their is a minutes silence or applause for him today, a loyal servant for many years, RIP Charlie.
Great turn of speed with his magic sponge and recycled ball bladder of water. Not sure how quick he’d be with all the kit they carry now!
RIP.
98 was a ripe old age. The magic sponge certainly worked!
RIP Charlie.
RIP Charlie.
I know things have changed a bit and players have become more fragile, but I don’t remember injury problems been as bad when you used the magic sponge.
RIP Charlie,a great servant to United
Never seemed to have as many injuries in Charlie’s day maybe all that wintergreen he used, thank you Charlie RIP.
Always thought that Charlie and Ashman looked like twins. Loved the smell of wintergreen as you got closer to the ground, especially on a cold winter’s night game.
We did have the injuries, but they played on usually with an injection or two before the match.
Yes Heath a special place,Charlie must have worked really hard before a game, getting all those muscles loose and warm,do you think the same happens now?.
Hey, there Heath, you forgot to add the 2nd part of the combination with Wintergreen – the gentle aroma of piping hot Vimto!
RIP Charlie Strong, a club legend. Not sure some of todays diva’s would cope well with that ‘SPONGE’
You never heard a wrong word about this gentleman, condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the former players who he cared for.
In the clubs history, will never be forgotten.
The strong smell of embrocation wafted around the O.S.G. before every match. Happy days in the 50s and 60s! I remember them well. Charlie did a fine job with his “sponge bag”. Requiescat in pace.
