If Jimmy can’t succeed with more money, I worry he would be struggle more than a competent manager with less.

April 28, 2024 at 7:48 pm #284751JD will stay. Simon Elliott said so, that they have extended the contract.
I hope that isn’t the case with Dean being resigned.
In regards to the budget Lesgeo, pretty sure michelle said a while back that the budget would need to be cut by around 40%. That would be cut by offloading Kelly who’ll be on a fair wedge despite not playing many games, Evans, Roberts and possibly Whitehall.
All will be on substantial money for this level.
April 28, 2024 at 8:11 pm #284754We can only “offload” players under contract if the player agrees.
That usually involves the new club offering at least as much cash and being in an agreeable location.
I remember Hurst being ‘instructed” to get rid of underperforming high earners. Amazingly he couldn’t find anyone daft enough to pay the likes of Perch 4 grand a week.
April 28, 2024 at 8:13 pm #284755How does 60% of our current budget fair with likes of Tamworth’s and Boston’s I wonder? Still competitive?
April 28, 2024 at 8:14 pm #284756Lol, forgot about Perchy!

He wanted to sign Lennell John Lewis an pay him £1000 a week – he had been out for 11 months recovering from an ACL !

Topics: 1But if some players still under contract, that’s going to eat into reduced budget. Unless some cash injection comes in from somewhere, it’s going to be a bleak one.
Maybe some of the directors will be willing to put some serious cash in? When Simon Elliott and Ian Sharp were looking to take over, they must have had some plans for cash injection. Not sure Michelle continuing to fundraise will be enough, she’s done a great job so far but worried it won’t be able to keep it going for next season
April 28, 2024 at 11:29 pm #284769Have you seen the person spec sheets for road sweepers and bin people?
You need a degree to empty bins these days. But not to run a political party like say, UKIP.
Alternatively, let’s aim low and wallow in the cesspit for a decade or two?
If leading the league for a good part of the season, finishing in the playoffs and then going out on a penalty are grounds for dismissal, who of any calibre would want to come here and with hardly any cash to spend? What sort of reputation does it give the club?
In case nobody noticed, it has been the persistent sacking of managers season after season that has contributed to the club being where it is already – in the proverbial cesspit of NLN.

You’re confusing the term “sacked” with not having a contract renewed!
Nobody is being sacked.
The guy from the smoking goat has not had his contract renewed, not heard anyone claiming he’s been sacked.1 user thanked author for this post.
April 29, 2024 at 10:39 am #284793Fair comment, but either way we’ve earned a poor reputation for keeping managers, boardroom stability and club finance.
High standards are important, but so is realism. A boy wonder manager with a stellar CV isn’t about to walk through the revolving door, wave his wand, and in a magical flash take the club back to FL2.
But, we did well this season, and we just might do better next time if we build on it rather than getting rid, going backwards and starting over. Failure to get promoted this year is just a bruise, not a tattoo.

April 29, 2024 at 10:56 am #284795Tart it up with artistic flourishes as much you like Gurney, fact remains the performances by and large weren’t anywhere near good enough and the buck stops with Dean. The barometer dial barely moved from ‘dull / cloudy’ up against half decent teams. No progress was made on that score all season. Players looked like they needed better coaching, others faired better elsewhere etc. Formations, team selection, tactics etc. Are you ignoring all that in favour of ideological principles?

April 29, 2024 at 11:41 am #284797Gurnelista, I know what you’re saying but I have given Dean unconditional support this season and defended him on here and still said he could turn it around to actually win the league until it was mathematically impossible, then I’ve supported him into this playoff and I really thought we’d have a go at it but we just didn’t.
The fact is if we had fought and challenged our way to second place and gone out on pens, then it would be poor to replace the manager. But, we’ve stumbled along since January, gifted the title to Tamworth then set up to nullify Boston at home in front of an 8,000 crowd. We played 2 hours of football against Boston and couldn’t score a goal.
Dean, in his Humberside interview said losing Smith, Butterfield and Whitehall were reasons for the loss of form in Jan but we had players like Shrimpton, Wilson and Pugh who have done really well loaned out to teams in the same league, we still had Elliott, and when he brought Pugh back he seemed to do well for us then dropped out of favour again. Corbett looked like a good loan signing but he didn’t even make the bench against Boston.
If the board keep Dean I can only see it turning sour if he doesn’t get results.4 users thanked author for this post.
April 29, 2024 at 12:00 pm #284799Gotta agree and Saturdays team set up was just a bridge too far with Beestin played in the wrong position, Sembie-Ferris left on the bench and a sub keeper for the first time in ages also on the bench reeked of containment rather than go out and win the game in normal time, which with the right team selection and tactics we were more than capable of. It’s all ended up very flat and disappointing and I’m sorry to say JD is entirely to blame.

April 29, 2024 at 2:02 pm #284813Gurney, we may well have sacked too many managers, but I believe that the majority of supporters were in agreement with all of them. After all, they were sacked for a reason.
Just because we have sacked a number of managers dies not mean we should stick with one who has produced some incredibly boring football and has failed to achieve what was asked of him. And he had money.
The next man will likely have a lot less money and just as great an expectation on him. And we may get it wrong. However, it would be negligent to stick with JD.
As for who, I personally don’t know. But there will be a fair number of current managers who would be keen to join us. They will believe that they will be the one to return us to the promised land. Let’s hope that we choose the right man (or Lady!!).

April 29, 2024 at 2:05 pm #284814Heard today like ya do he’s being offered a new contract, source Shrimptons dad via third party now fourth.
The crap performances didn’t just start from Xmas, its being most of the season away, I understand that when your not there a draw at Alfreton with ten men for 80 mins the same at Chorley and Boston would seem ok but it wasn’t, failing to breakdown Curzon and not even picking a point up there, we were shite. Did Jimmy learn and adjust anything all season and all our answers are the same no, bloody egos of football managers we’ve had em all Wilcox, Cox, Hill and now Dean they went and you should to Jimmy.1 user thanked author for this post.
April 29, 2024 at 2:13 pm #284816From the National league to beaten National League North play-off semis in 18 months, but don’t worry he’s a nice guy and everything.

Time will tell… a bruise, a tattoo – or an amputation!
This time next year, the good people of Scunny will know more.

Season ticket sales and attendances will fall dramatically if he’s retained.
We could be entering the ‘dark ages’

Ditto.

April 29, 2024 at 2:52 pm #284823He will get kept on due to the aggravation he endured during the season destabilising the team and it made a contribution to the performances.
Not what I want to hear!!!
Within work it gets tiresome ahh they are a nice person quotes. But can he do his job.
Well no but he brings something different!
And that’s what ?Can see this being the scenario at AA.
If I don’t perform in my role the company loses money and I get my P45.
It’s no different or shouldn’t be.The feel good factor at the club was back before the weekend. Can you see it being there come 6 games into the season and we’ve taken 5 points and JD is still at the helm.
For sure there won’t be 3k turning up1 user thanked author for this post.
April 29, 2024 at 3:16 pm #284827I believe Mr Whoever he was brought him in to fail and we went into NLN. I also think the plan was working for the “Do you remember Scunthorpe United ? What season did they disappear ?
Luckily Michelle and the others who joined the board thought on their feet and tapped into the fans enthusiasm. JD kept his job but to maintain the fans enthusiasm a rethink is needed and the attitude of the football become more entertaining, attacking. I don’t think the present management team can do it.

I don’t believe this. I think it was a Hilton underestimation of SUFC. The kind of move that would have impressed at Ilkeston… but not here.
April 29, 2024 at 3:53 pm #284830He’s simply got to go.
He was found out in the NL.
This was confirmed in the NLN – biggest budget & squad in the league but struggled to beat village / suburban part timers.18 of the 24 teams averaged less than 1,500 spectators in season 2023-24.
12 of the 24 averaged less than 1,000 spectators. No disrespect to the following two teams but 149 people watched Curzon v Peterborough Sports.
How did we do against these giants?
Curzon beat us twice 1-0
A draw (1-1) and a win by the minimum (1-0) against P’boro Sports.Hardly inspires confidence for next season.
We drew 10 games and lost 10 games.
That’s fifty points we threw away.
If we’d taken half of those points then we’d have been runaway champions.Get rid of the chump!

April 29, 2024 at 8:34 pm #284881DM – No ideology or art, just realism. This is NLN. Players often miss chances, fall over, or can’t be bothered. Managers often struggle with tactics, and the games are often rubbish. But we scored plenty, and had it not been for a missed pen on Saturday we wouldn’t be having this debate now. FFS, anyone would think we’d just been relegated!
Ironx3 – supporters are often quick to call for a sacking on messageboards and elsewhere when the results start to falter. Fan impatience is legendary, as was the impatience of the last two chairmen. And look where it got us. Even when we had Laws and some of the most memorable matches in the last two decades, plenty on here were calling for him to be sacked!
Course, if Dean left there would be plenty of chancers willing to take over. But forget the ‘promised land’ any time soon. At this level, most would be useless, clueless, and take us back even further.
As for Nostradamus’ prognostications about ‘entering the dark ages’ … after regularly sacking managers for the past decade, that’s precisely where we are now! Surely it’s obvious.
Attendances? In this league ours might be an indicator of superior wealth, but we have big debts, meaning there’s far less available for the club to sign/keep players than some others.
Results? If this, if that…. if my aunt was my uncle she’d have had bollox!
True, the season hasn’t turned out the way we wanted, but under Dean we’ve done reasonably well, despite our impoverishment and near death. But past experience suggests that appointing yet another manager would be capitulating to the same populist impatience and recklessness which helped bring us here in the first place. Stick with him throughout 2024, let him consolidate and build, then review in January.
