Bemused that this whole ‘terrible interview’ thing was mentioned on BBC Radio Humberside’s breakfast show this morning during the news. Listeners invited to ring or text in to Kofi Smiles to have their say on Andy Butler’s interview! Has the world gone completely mad?
December 17, 2024 at 8:25 am #295641I find the whole furore around the Butler interview a little ‘over dramatic’. Sure, he was brusque, but what do we expect. He is undoubtedly under significant pressure, and at half-time was likely 45 minutes away from losing his job.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that he was correct to treat the interviewer with such disdain, just that too many are overreacting to a storm in a teacup.

That’s journalism for you, as my journalist brother always said ” bad news is good news “. Most people often are more interested in stories that are spicy or controversial than good news stories, you get the odd gooey eyed feel good story pushed into the news, normally around this time of year but by and large it’s the garbage people gobble up, then can’t wait to get on social media to spread it even further. Touche Dum Dum.

December 17, 2024 at 8:45 am #295643Like I said the other day, his detractors took to the Humserside interview posted on X with over the top reactions like a pack of hyenas. Most of them supporters. That’s what’s fuelled the fire. I can understand criticisms of his interview but a fair number of the posts went beyond that. Then there was an X post since deleted I think of clip of a supporter at half time loudly calling Butler a ‘w****r’, which he no doubt heard.

December 17, 2024 at 9:16 am #295644The world has gone mad but Butler only has himself to blame for this. We have all listened to a lot of post match interviews from a lot of different managers at different levels from non league to World cups and I can’t remember one as bad as Butlers on Saturday.
December 17, 2024 at 9:55 am #295645Just go full Dean Brennan on Saturday, Andy.
December 17, 2024 at 10:45 am #295646If someone did shout that im sure the intention was for Butler to hear it, and only vocalizing what most fans were thinking well at least along them lines.
He’s embarrassed he’s hurt and more than anything he’s annoyed with the fans criticism, we’ve heard it all from him in his interviews from we’re still top of the league for so many weeks while teams whittled away at the seven point lead to when we lost it we’re still in a good position, to the last one and he spits his dummy out.
The simple answer his give a proper honest interview with a bit of contrition, an honest assessment, and a apology to the fans for an abject performance and that he will do everything to address it going forward, and promise next week will be better.
I’ll buy into that unless it isn’t.December 17, 2024 at 11:16 am #295647Yeah. Surprise. I am now starting to get a little more optimistic that he may – perhaps – no longer be swimming against the tide.
If you give fans: ugly football; fail to see that your system ain’t cuttin’ it; get cross if many ordinary paying supporters mention it – you are riding for a big fall.
I predict that, from the furore caused by ‘that interview’, there will emerge a rather chastened figure. I do not think he dare ever be so sulky again.
As previously mentioned, I applaud him for making changes to a system that was not working.
(I rather hope that we see 3 – 5 players who are either not producing, or have fallen below acceptable standards, will leave in January. This may make space for a freshening up of the squad.)
After Alfreton – a game which will haunt me for the remainder of my life – we had reached rock bottom. Perhaps the only way is up.
Up to that point I had not wanted AB’s head on a spike – after Alfreton my attempts towards positivity had largely disappeared.
Let us hope to see a little more flexibility so that Andy can have a good Christmas. There may be some signs of improvement already – so let’s just forget the radio interview.
Fans hate negative football. Over decades it has probably caused as many downfalls as totting up the amount of points lost.
If your guys attack, attack, attack and lose against Hereford, Andy, you will see astonishingly little criticism. Most fans do actually try to be fair-minded but, do bear in mind, they are 100% correct to feel that they are entitled to be entertained. They pay your salary.1 user thanked author for this post.

It’s not an if awaywego. It was definitely posted. Surprised you didn’t hear it in the stand too. Regardless of people thinking it, ‘W****r’ shouldn’t be shouted at him along with other obscenities like that. End of. Was it the same fan who described the first half performance as ‘utter woke nonsense’ on Gareth’s blog? I noticed he just let that one go without any counter point like ‘you either don’t know what ‘woke’ is supposed to mean, or you think you’re amusing, which you’re not’.

December 17, 2024 at 12:20 pm #295649At this level, are managers contractually obligated to give a PMI?
Myopic minutious media coverage isn’t necessary or desirable. I don’t give a monkeys about what Boyce had for breakfast, that Becks curling tongs are defective or that Fitz is wearing new gloves due to his dog eating his favourite pair.
Remember the good old (pre internet / smart phone) days? Todays ‘news’, tomorrow’s chip shop paper.
December 17, 2024 at 12:31 pm #295650Hmm, jumpers for goalposts, Bob Steels and Tom Taylor in the Telegraph, Saturday late edition, Spot the Ball competition…isn’t it?

Bloody hell Spot the Ball takes you back. Bloke I knew for years would stick a pin in the STB picture in multiple places, convinced he would hear the air escaping when his pin punctured the invisible ball. Always caused a laugh in the pub when someone trotted that one out.
December 17, 2024 at 2:14 pm #295654Should have just put a microphone in the changing room post match.
Probably would have learned more from that.

Judging by the performance, perhaps not.
December 17, 2024 at 4:58 pm #295661I wonder what the RH audience figures (average) are for our games?
If we’re stranded at this level for a while, then it may end up where we (club) do our own online streaming commentary in the way that many other clubs at this level do?
One way to keep control within.
December 17, 2024 at 5:12 pm #295662The guy shouting at Butler at half time left the game during the break…. or at least moved, which was good as he was stood near a father and daughter who was under 10 and didn’t need to hear that kind of language. I agree with Fansy above in that society seems to revel in a bit of hate and chaos which isn’t good for anyone.

December 17, 2024 at 7:07 pm #295663The mobile phone and the tinternet changed society forever, what we have now ain’t going anywhere anytime soon like it or not.
WARNING. There will be swearing at football matches if your of that disposition who find it offensive please don’t attend.
Ps, it’s ok to challenge said person SBB if you don’t agree with it, or see a Steward and let them deal with it.

Typically trying to turn a reasonable observation that people attending a match shouldn’t shout the likes of ‘w****r’ very loudly at our manager in to a misplaced slight about people objecting to it being upset by it. Pretty sure most of us on here hear this type of swearing every day in the work place or out and about, but you spectacularly miss the point and suggest they don’t attend. Pretty lame, even from you.
