If you haven’t heard the Andy Butler interview on BBC Radio Humberside after the Marine match, I highly recommend. It’s an absolute car crash.
Butler clearly worn out by it all and somewhat exasperated that Ollie Turner pretty much brushes past the three points and persists in questions about how shit it all is…
The more this goes on, the less I can see this ending well.

December 14, 2024 at 8:27 pm #295541He certainly sounded like a guy under a great deal of pressure.
I should think the adrenaline was running a bit high after the half time bollocking as well.
I’m sure he is more than aware that things are shite, but what’s he supposed to do? Throw the players under the bus? He’ll be criticised no matter what he says.
I thought is was a bad interview. He’s not the first manager to have done it, won’t be the last.

December 14, 2024 at 8:28 pm #295542Butler came across as a right sulky pillock. All ollie did was ask the questions that the vast majority of the fans would have asked. A win is fantastic, but that was pure dog shite again. A dodgy penalty and a defensive howler has saved him for another week or two. Butler is a very lucky man.

December 14, 2024 at 8:56 pm #295544The last line of the match report on the club’s website suggests it was inserted under management instructions to let supporters know this is how they respond to outside criticism. It could well go tits up from here if performances don’t rapidly improve. I don’t want anybody sacked unnecessarily I just want the bloody team to start performing like they can do and should be doing.

I think that’s a fair assessment. Not impressed with it but the pressure is clearly taking its toll, plus all the abuse and talk of last chance saloon no doubt. On the flip side there was no mention from Ollie of how the substitutions made a difference and how a team supposedly not playing for him turned it around late on and won. Despite what you and a few others say wondergoals, I’m far from impressed with on pitch affairs lately, but it’s telling how some of Butler’s detractors from day one on Twitter can’t wait to jump on this interview like a pack of hyenas.

December 14, 2024 at 9:05 pm #295546Wasn’t good listening at all and has taken the shine from an important win.
On a human level I feel for Andy, great servant for the club and sounds like he’s had personal issues; he’s feeling the pressure and trying to protect the team which is understandable, but he’s got to learn to handle criticism better. He’s got be far the biggest budget in the league and the odds stacked in his favour, that comes with scrutiny which no other manager has faced in our history.
Despite the win it feels he’s closer to the exit than ever. Is there a way back? Looking unlikely, not impossible. He needs a big performance and result against Hereford as a minimum.
A spectacular collapse since S’boro away though, Still can’t figure out what’s gone so wrong.

December 14, 2024 at 9:08 pm #295547Refering to this I believe I-A…
‘After holding onto their brilliant turn around the Scunthorpe players gathered round the centre circle following the full-time whistle in order to show the togetherness and belief that is instilled into this United side despite outside noise.’
December 14, 2024 at 9:23 pm #295548Cliff – Torps was saying the team is lacking in confidence. Maybe a lot of it is just that?
December 14, 2024 at 9:44 pm #295549The first half was awful. The post match interview was a very awkward listen and Fair play to Olly for persisting. I want Andy to do well, I want the team to do well. I don’t think they’ve stopped playing for him but it was clear to see something isn’t right when you consider we have more quality and depth than other teams at this level. Yes you can argue that the quality isn’t great, but it’s still better than others in this league. The players didn’t look like they are enjoying their football, the subs during the half time break didn’t look like they were itching to get on. The body language speaks volumes. I really hope it changes. I went today with a friend who doesn’t watch Scunthorpe often, his comment at half time was he’s never seen such a poor game of football…. yet the crowds are a reasonable size and the team is not far off the top. Strange times

You’re not wrong. I had no knowledge of this level of football and don’t think I ever will.
A couple of wins for us, a few losses elsewhere and everything is back on track for a title run. Despite a terrible run of performances. To me it just feels like a weekly lottery, any team can beat any team, top to bottom.
I would love to see free flowing sexy football but at this level it seems to be about who can grind out the most results no matter how tedious.

December 14, 2024 at 10:06 pm #295554I reckon he’s bang on the money tbh Deerey, don’t think the answer lies with a silver bullet such as 4-4-2 as some fans hope.
December 14, 2024 at 10:13 pm #295556Felt a bit embarrassed for Butler come past scunny fans during warm up no applause no nothing looked a dead man walking.
Don’t really know how we won and I’m sure I’m not alone for those who went, but a win was needed and a win we got that should be his job safe till the new year, my advice to Butler is just don’t blow it and don’t even think of benching Whitehall again you Muppet, whatever faults he has is presence and his ability to be in the right place when needed knows no bounds, must be a very bad day for 64 and cronies.
Will listen to his interview tomorrow with anticipation.

December 14, 2024 at 10:17 pm #295558Couldn’t raise a smile on the much easier OWS interview despite having won, clearly not happy with something. Criticism maybe?

December 14, 2024 at 10:17 pm #295560After just listening to Andy’s interview on Humberside I would say he needs to stop giving such negative unhelpful responses to Ollie’s questions, the fans listening deserve better TBH. If Andy listens back to that interview I’m sure he will realise, or he should as manager anyway, that interviews like that do nobody any favours, he has to be better than that when dealing with media.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to get your UEFA pro license?
December 14, 2024 at 10:29 pm #295565Passed my 25yard swimming test surely that out does Butler.

Aye,he may well regret how he conducted it in a few years, if not in the morning. He’s still learning, but some wrote him off before he started. He needs support not pelters and increasing abuse. He’s OUR manager, not the oppositions, though you’d be forgiven for thinking he is the way some of our supporters tar and feather him.

December 14, 2024 at 10:49 pm #295573Olly Turner is a clown,I don’t listen to him at all.
December 14, 2024 at 10:58 pm #295574Maybe some Amanda White could tempt you back to Humberside? Was always positive.
December 14, 2024 at 11:37 pm #295575He’s the face of the club… in these interviews he’s coming out to speak to the fans… yet he decides that he’s had enough of tough questioning from OT and he thinks the best option is to act like an absolute idiot!!
He’s let the board down tonight, this interview was an embarrassment!!!
What’s clear to most people is that Andy Butler is NOT a football manager… I’m hoping that by the time the people in charge catch up it’s not too late and we still have a promotion chance

December 15, 2024 at 1:11 am #295576I have had a listen and would offer a slightly different opinion. AB was maybe trying to be defiant in light of the recent and justifiable criticism of him, his assistant and his tactics.
He played 4-4-2, made bold team changes and altered the game with his substitutions. Fair play to him and his players backed him with a show of defiance too.
The little comment ‘outside noise’ from the club match report is interesting however.
At least we now know that even if the club chose not to say anything they were at least listening and sensitive to the criticism of their manager and the poor football being served up.
A victory in any manner will instill confidence throughout the team and the club as a whole.
All good then.
So next week and in subsequent games until the end of the season AB now needs to serve up entertaining attacking football by creating chances and sticking to our game rather than adjusting to counter the opposition. This will bring victories and unite the fanbase in his favour.
Anything else will not, and whilst AB took the brunt, the little comment ‘outside noise’ has not gone unnoticed on here, hence the reason I read it.
So if Ab is being defiant good for him, it’s better than the petulance we have seen of recent.
I am prepared to accept ‘outside noise’ so long as there as been some ‘internal noise’.
Up the Iron and this new defiance and fightback.

December 15, 2024 at 4:06 am #295580OT has the right to ask the questions he did. If not we just finish up with a one sided like the ows.
Wonder how the post match interview will go next week or will OT be waiting for 70mims again.
Pretty petty tbh. Still got to stay professional.Hopefully the win kicks the Iron on and things turn around.
2nd a playing so crap. Don’t think those shackles are on to be released unfortunately.1 user thanked author for this post.

December 15, 2024 at 7:37 am #295583The outside noise comes from pretty poor performances in what is a poor league, the voices of some of this outside noise parts with their own cash to follow (and save) the club. It’s a slippery slope to try and instil a them and us when the ‘them’ clearly weren’t performing (simple 5 yard passes as en eg) and the us the people who keep spending money and donating to the club.
At least OT does challenge and if Andy wants a career in football management at any decent level you’re going to have to get used to being challenged with questions you might not like answering.
Let’s see how they play v Hereford which is now a very important fixture.3 users thanked author for this post.
December 15, 2024 at 7:40 am #295584Outside noise ? Well at least it’s official that we aren’t all in it together.
I don’t know who writes the match reports on the ows (presumably James Moody), but there isn’t any outside noise. There is zero interest in us from anywhere outside the club. The non league paper print a little match report with info from some source and Radio Humberside are doing their job reporting what they see and asking the questions they think need asking.
There is no meaningful local newspaper anymore.
Any “noise” is coming from people who support Scunthorpe United via the various forms of social media and some vocal dissent from the stands. The approach from the club is creating an us and them feel which really isn’t good. I’ve never known such petulant interviews from a manager, it is embarrassing to listen to – and this is a guy who Ive supported and really thought would be good.4 users thanked author for this post.
December 15, 2024 at 9:59 am #295585On the 70 min delay last week here he was supposed to be giving a dressing down to the players, seems like it’s not true talking to fans who regularly appear on garths blog yesterday and most of the players were in the executive lounge talking to them, so where was Butler probably sat on his arse like he did again yesterday for long spells cant blame him mind it was a tough watch.
Reiterate again what a shite league it is, 8 points from 12 that’ll normally win the league form, and yet in 3 of those games we’ve being absolutely dire, funny old game!
