Just looked through the pictures quickly the trialist striker looks a fairly big lad. Not far off lofts height by the looks of it but a bit skinny.

Anyone catch what they were calling him?

He’s called Tyrone O’Neill been released by Middlesbrough where he had been on loan at Darlington. McMahon probably got him in.

He could’ve been one of the three that came on. Not heard who any of them were

Looked this lad up and he definitely looks like the number 17 who came on. Impressed me the last 30 minutes

Hopeful punts rather than players with any sort of pedigree

Yeah it looked like Alex Perry who came on for the last 30 minutes. Looked very comfortable on the ball and played some good passes. Worth a punt

We can only do hopeful punts on our budget.

At least someone with professional football experience and qualifications is seeing them train and play before taking the punt.

Last year we seemed to hand out 2 year deals based on agent recommendations and you tube videos.

Rather have hopeful punts than useless cnuts.

I am hopeful we might end up with a better team than the one we had the previous season for the first time in at least 5 years.

Maybe not much better but just enough to keep our league status.

The difference is Perry played 17 games in League 1 last season when some of our signings last season were from tier 8 or 9

Hopeful punts rather than players with any sort of pedigree

Mind you, some of our recent pedigree dogs turned out to be pups!

Adam Hammill, James Perch, Simon Church, Jamie Proctor. Even Lee Novak only really did as well as Loft did last season.

A bit of skill and a positive attitude will do for starters.

Comparison of Perry’s style with someone we know well, from a Wigan fans site.

“Alex Perry, whose range of passing from the centre of the field can be a real asset, has been pushed out by the arrival of the more conservative Funso Ojo”.

Funso might have got into my top 20 CMs since 1966. But – maybe not.

“I think”, very much doubt it. What the hell are you doing on this site? Have you ever been to an Iron game?

Watched the highlights and, actually, we didn’t look too shabby at all!

Was impressed with the way O’Neill took his goal. Very Andy Keogh-like, and boy, could we do with a player like that again.

Passing and movement looked slicker too. I know it was just a friendly, but if we can get these boys on board and loan in a decent keeper we might even end up with a better lineup that last season.

Good finish, helped in no small measure by looking to be well offside!

    [loanee DANNY WILSON]

Danny Wilson the player we would have loved to sign, him along with Terry Heath and
Bish for me. If he had not struggled with so much injury I would have added Noel Parkinson, thought he had great ability, good football brain and a cracking shot on him.

For me, Calvo-Garcia & Richard Kell will take some beating. Honourable mention for Ian Baraclough.

Wonder what would’ve happened to Kell if he didn’t break his leg twice.

Absolutely the most natural CM I’ve seen here. Just attracted the ball like a magnet. So composed and always seemed to be in exactly the right place.

He could’ve had a really good career.

In my mind, he always played with his head up, always looking for a pass. He wasn’t bad after the first leg break, I thought he came back well, but the second one was obviously just too much. Famously he is an airline pilot now, he’d be a brilliant guest for the podcast.

Great comparison between Kell & Wayne Graves – Kell arrived at the right time to receive the ball, Graves arrived just after the ball had gone. (But covered every blade of grass!!)

Bara was a midfield general who inspired those around him.
    Mr Kenyon, anyone?

    Fingers crossed Les.

It’s been beaten into the ground but it’s what we’ve needed since Bish left. Bish was a different kind of leader to Bara but it’s what we need desperately.

You’re right, a leader is essential, that’s why I found the choice of captain very strange.

I was once piloted to Spain by Kell – and had a quick word.
Jet2 from Leeds, if memory serves.

Wonder what would’ve happened to Kell if he didn’t break his leg twice.

I’ve said that before about him. What a player he was. Brilliant range of passing, good energy and stuck his boot in when needed.

To be fair he’s one of the best CM players I’ve seen in an iron shirt. That period when he was fit and on form he looked way above where we were playing.

In my mind if he stayed fit and healthy he could have easily played for a top end championship club.

Kell had a bit of everything. Fantastic player.

As said, it’s a real shame he broke his leg twice and then moved to Barnsley. Kell went on loan to Scarborough on loan from Barnsley if I remember rightly and was subsequently sent home citing unprofessional behaviour.

I suspect he knew it was over for him in football then anyway.
