While it’s amusing seeing those decrying others as snowflakes get upset and outraged over everything, what is the gotcha here? Travis opposes a trans person on an advert, but is acting feminine?

Acting feminine doesn’t make you a woman, so where is the hypocrisy? Trans women claim to be women, Travis does not. Seeing Travis behave like a woman as a gotcha for this treats it as if women are a bunch of regressive and sexist stereotypes.

Christianity teaches that people must forgive the sins of others in order for God to forgive them their sins.

Forgiveness also seems to be open to interpretation by some Christians.

As a Christian I love to check in to the Bru to sharpen my theological insights alongside the experts. I’d stick to footie and political wrangling if I were you boys.

No comment though on how two faced Christianity is, old chap. Perhaps a good thing as as I’d hate to trawl through multi paragraphs that actually say very little. All aboard the Ark, and sod those left behind. :-)

For theological insights read – a book club with only one novel to discuss.

I wasn’t suggesting that anyone wasn’t ‘allowed’ to say or do anything, IA. Just offering a different perspective, albeit with a touch of sarcasm.
I’ve written loads before on the ‘reasonableness’ of the Christian faith and elicited a range of responses. Some of them have even been respectful!! Others have expressed their views more stridently… Christians are ‘unintelligent’ or ‘uneducated’ or two faced etc. (I even have one poster who ignores all the efforts I’ve made and calls me a ‘silent Christian.) I do find it interesting how Christianity attracts strong adverse comments when other ‘faith groups’ seem to go under the radar. I suspect that as our culture increasingly buys into the fantasy of a secular and progressive Utopia the frustrating resilience of our Judaeo Christisn roots will attract even more opposition.

The person who called you a silent Christian is another Christian, so that one isn’t linked with those bashing religion. I am sure you’re aware of that, but the way your post reads is as if that was from a religion basher. Some of the responses here can draw a wry smile, but aren’t understanding of why people believe.

As for Christian roots, it isn’t the oldest religion practiced on this island, and people managed to convert from Paganism to Christianity without some metaphysical conflict of culture. Similarly, the beginning of secular thought in the enlightenment didn’t. In fact, countries with the most freedom and high IQ test tend to be more secular than Christian or Muslim states which enforce their religion, be it Uganda or Afghanistan. Give me a ‘secularist utopia’ over religious busy bodies controlling and damaging lives in the name of belief. I agree that other religions do get ignored to single out Christianity. Islam often does, and is more problematic than Christianity, but that doesn’t mean I will refrain from criticising Christianity’s authoritarian and controlling elements. It goes without saying that individual Christians, Muslims or whoever can freely practice their faith, but I would argue that’s the benefit of secularism. Of course it means not shoving faith on to others, which upsets theists, but non-believers shouldn’t be subjected to religion in parts of society where it has nothing to do with religion.

Of course I am not calling for churches or mosques to be removed of faith and rituals. There are incidents where there has been overreach, like a worker told to remove a cross necklace, but they are comparatively rare and most understand this is wrong and we can strive to be more understanding for the future. That is still preferable to religious authoritarians wanting their faith to control others in some way.

Oh, and by saying religious based countries tend to be less democratic or intelligent, I don’t mean that theists are stupid or inherently undemocratic. I think the reasons are multifactorial, but strong religious influence has an authoritarian streak and it’s this which causes issues, in my opinion. I don’t think communism is conductive for democracy and a rounded education for similar reasons. It has no vested interests in expanding knowledge from a state level.

“Christians are ‘unintelligent’ or ‘uneducated’ or two faced etc. (I even have one poster who ignores all the efforts I’ve made and calls me a ‘silent Christian.)”

That’s the whole point of my single post on this thread. The Christian continues to bate another Christian on this site. The Christian is unable to forgive the other Christian.

The main problem with Christianity, in my opinion, is the Christians!

Going ‘below the surface’ … any Christian who thinks he/she isn’t ‘a work in progress’ is deluded and misrepresents the faith. It’s in that space that some of the apparent inconsistencies sit. And then , of course , there may well be the bad actors who have adopted a label but have no spiritual authenticity. I’ve met a few and don’t blame people for being put off. Jesus warned that they would show up in every generation.

I’m sure both the Christians mentioned on here would benefit from a cool bottle of Bud and a little chill out time together.

Bad actors are easier to find than Christians.

I wouldn’t be surprised if bpg rears his head to make a barbed comment against who he sees as an ‘impure’ and ‘silent’ Christian.
