At 3-1 up, the game should have been won, surely? And Beck scored last week so it’s hardly a bad sub. Maybe a little early?

January 26, 2025 at 10:10 am #297961I think the fact he left Whitehall on against Farsley, (he was on for a hatrick and why not let him try for it and go for top goalscorer as well), and he then picks up an injury and has to be subbed probably influenced the decision making against Brackley and Shields.
I think Butler probably would agree with your point Awaywego.1 user thanked author for this post.
January 26, 2025 at 10:12 am #297962Butler is a young manager and has made mistakes. There has been deserved criticism, but sometimes not constructive criticism from some people, who have seemed dead set on him being an ‘imbecile’ and seem more bothered about being proved right on that. I am just pleased that we have had a start of what looks like a return to form, even with defensive errors needing to be stamped out. This league is the 6th tier for a reason, so such mistakes will be more common.

Also, Roberts and Whitehall are the racehorses in this team. Any other position you can reasonably quickly get loanees in, so he’s got to be a bit careful with those two.2 users thanked author for this post.
January 26, 2025 at 10:38 am #297964The point I made on another thread. I have no problem with taking off Roberts and Whitehall to look after them, especially when we have games close together. However AB thinks these subs don’t weaken the team, they do and so the timing is crucial. The win must be secure before the class players come off IMO.

January 26, 2025 at 10:56 am #297967The thing is to learn from your mistakes Butler has to be dragged kicking and screaming before he learns, then he can go from one extreme to the other remember the 5 one game to none the next when being chastised over it.
Evans a midfielder, Whitehall a number 10, Carlton an out and out forward, 5 at the back at home.
January 26, 2025 at 12:22 pm #297977Regarding, the subs, he’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. Not doing too bad at the end of the day I reckon. Credit where it’s due. Some are unable to give any it seems. Notable by absence.

January 26, 2025 at 12:51 pm #297979I just hope he continues to learn. He could have cost us 4 points last week, he didn’t, he got away with it. A lesson to be learnt though surely.

If Roberts picked up a knock and was out for a month yesterday Butler would’ve been chastised. He has a squad to manage aswell as a game.
The only thing that changed the game was another sloppy goal conceded which the subs had little impact with.

January 26, 2025 at 2:01 pm #297984I think Torps reads the game well. Not once did he mention sub issues. Just a tad exasperated that the goals came from nothing. Sorry, ‘naffin’ :)
January 26, 2025 at 2:03 pm #297985A lot of people are sounding more like Butler every day, ‘we won didn’t we’
To not see or want to see that the subs changed that game yesterday is pretty lame.
I’m just glad we’re in a position to criticize having won. But for that worldy one handed save you’d have been on the same page.
January 26, 2025 at 2:07 pm #297986It’s not a matter of not criticising. Of course defensive errors need to be stamped out, but after improved performances and wins surely some positivity is allowed and being overly negative about defensive errors seems a bit much. As for fine margins, that happens across board. I don’t think it should detract from the positives though.

January 26, 2025 at 2:41 pm #297992Hard to say if I’d think differently had I been there awaywego. I suspect not though.
January 26, 2025 at 3:06 pm #297997The 1st goal we gave away was a joke and our overrated keeper barely tried to defend it and his day didn’t really get better from that moment apart from one save hit straight at him from close range. Second goal wrecked our confidence and we visibly backed off although we had some exciting breaks.

January 26, 2025 at 3:45 pm #297998our overrated keeper
There’s plenty of competition but that’s up there fighting for the number 1 spot.
January 26, 2025 at 10:21 pm #298018Then there is the other minor issues of two games on the trot with teams beaten letting them back into it very cheaply, then hoofing the ball up for 17 mins v Shields thinking it won’t come back and cause us a problem.
Football is a possession game so why hoof it straight to them. Especially when the strike force has dropped deep ie Beck so effectively you are playing the game in your own half.
Needham Market won’t be any different I suspect.
January 27, 2025 at 3:41 am #298023I think the penny finally dropped with AB when he saw the fans’ response after the Alfreton game.

Individual errors again. Boyce’s error with the poor header and Denton when moved to CM, fell asleep and didn’t track his runner. I will however say he shouldn’t have been there anyway.
I’d leave Boyce out for a while and start Evans. Evans has hardly been fantastic himself.
