35 teams have being relegated from L2 since 1992.
Only 4 have returned to the EFL at the first attempt.
The average finishing position in the first season following relegation from L2 is – 12th.
Well that’s a start. Grimsby are having an arguably good season and for last couple of months have been yo-yoing between 6th and 8th, so 12th will do for me to build on.
i would take a 12th placed finish
i would take a 12th placed finish
Key word is ‘average’
Guardian article from 5 years ago:
I would rip your arm of for 12th right now.
There’s still some living in cloud cuckoo/swan land if they think we will be anywhere near the top half next year.
If we finish 12th in the Conference, we’ll have won roughly 15 to 18 games, which would be AMAZING after recent seasons!
Even more sobering is that the following clubs are still non league:
Halifax 20 seasons and counting, Kidderminster 17, Boston United 15
Wrexham 14, Darlington 12, Stockport County 11, Aldershot Town 9, Torquay United 8, Dagenham and! Redbridge 6, York City 6, Chesterfield 4, Barnet 4, Yeovil 3, Notts County 3, Southend 1 and Grimsby 1
and the following clubs went out of business:
Maidstone United
Scarborough
Rushden & Diamonds
Chester City
Hereford United
Macclesfield
Bury
Desperately clutching at straws here, but I’d much rather be playing at Wrexham, Chesterfield and Notts than Sutton, Harrogate and Crawley.
I’m not clutching at those straws NI. I wish we’d been playing Burton, Accrington and Morecambe this year over Swindon, Tranmere and Brad City 😔😔
