Neil Bishop has signed as a player/coach for Gainsborough Trinity.
May 17, 2021 at 7:19 pm #207260I saw it earlier and Trinity have signed a player who we have never replaced.

May 18, 2021 at 12:34 pm #207277Not only that, Mick, but also the type of player that nearly every successful team has in its squad. We’ve missed the likes of Bish and Dawson badly, I’m afraid.

May 18, 2021 at 1:38 pm #207279Great signing for them.
May 18, 2021 at 2:12 pm #207282It was a very brave player that did not put in a shift or continually made the same mistakes when Bish and Murphy were running the midfield.
Not the best ball players we ever had but demanded and often got the best out of those around them.

May 18, 2021 at 4:59 pm #207285Exactly, MK, an on-field “general” to marshal and rally the troops. For me this should be a priority signing for the club — the type of player we’re talking about will typically have a lot of experience and therefore be likely to be approaching the end of his career.
For us at the moment that wouldn’t be an issue. We desperately need a couple of good seasons to get hope back into the club and at least some fans back on board, so if that’s all the player could give so be it.

May 18, 2021 at 5:12 pm #207286Absolutely right Bucks and there should be plenty out there. The issue will be selecting the right one and avoiding another wage thief, we’ve had enough of those. Wouldn’t be averse to a player/asst manager either. (Sorry Mark)

May 18, 2021 at 5:52 pm #207292Yes to all the above plus and I have said this ad nauseam for a while, an experienced spine to assist all the young inexperienced guys we have left in the squad. Keeping them fit would be the challenge but if we sign these players and keep them fit we have half a chance next season.

May 18, 2021 at 7:13 pm #207299Agree with a lot of the above however, is this type of head strong player appreciated by the board?
May 18, 2021 at 9:45 pm #207302No. Only room for one opinion here.

May 19, 2021 at 12:19 pm #207328I’m not so sure. I can’t believe Swann would want another season like this one if he can avoid it.

There’s an easy way to avoid it, sign some decent players capable of playing some exciting attacking football.
May 19, 2021 at 4:40 pm #207352I’ll believe it when it happens Bucks. We shall see.
May 19, 2021 at 5:27 pm #207359Never mind Swann. WE don’t want another season like the last one!
Or the previous one. Or the one before that.

Why not? When was the last season that any of us actually enjoyed? In fact when was the last time anyone actually enjoyed a game…anyone??? Nothing changes…well that’s not strictly true, things get worse year on year!

Honestly? Paul Hayes’ third (and final) debut at Mansfield, when he stuck that 30-yarder into the top corner after a few minutes. For me, it’s all been downhill since then.
May 20, 2021 at 1:33 pm #207401Nice memory Ferrite, great being behind the goal that day, what a goal.

He always speaks very highly of you.

What a strange point of view.
May 20, 2021 at 6:49 pm #207413Most of my views are strange to most people Ferrite, I don’t do it to be ackward they are just my views. The first time Haysy left fair enough, but then we got him back after been a poor squad player at Barnsley, but then to leave us for Preston for the big bucks and go into obscurity for the rest of his career when he could have been leading our forward line for another 7 or 8 years and been hero worshipped, very sad.
May 21, 2021 at 8:50 am #207418but then we got him back after been a poor squad player at Barnsley
Didn’t he score in the play-off final to get them into the Championship? Not exactly a fringe player.
but then to leave us for Preston for the big bucks and go into obscurity for the rest of his career
Was he even offered a contract here? I’m not sure he was. Also, I wouldn’t call his years at Wycombe as “obscurity”, he was a big player for them, even scored a couple of goals at White Hart Lane for them.

May 21, 2021 at 9:38 am #207419Saw Wycombe playing at Carlisle a few years back.
Hayes was outstanding. Sat in just behind the forwards and organised everything, never stopped talking and encouraging.
Paris Cowan-Hall had a good game for them too, and Akinfenwa was a real handful.
Shows what a bit of experience can do.
I wonder if Coxy can take us from zeros to heroes like Ainsworth did with the Chairboys?
Probably not, he doesn’t have the hair for it!

May 21, 2021 at 10:18 am #207421He left for Barnsley and failed to impress left or Preston and failed to impress, was the grass greener elsewhere no, did he get the big bucks yes, well done Haysy, Scunthorpe kick started his career twice and he showed no loyalty. I thought when Wharton was chairman everything was rosy was he playing silly buggers as well and not offering contract’s? like Swanny is perceived to do. Glad Swanny pissed him off when he let him go after helping us win promotion. A sense of karma for me.
May 21, 2021 at 10:28 am #207422I have never showed any loyalty to the company I worked for when another company offered me significantly more money. Would have had a problem selling it to my family if I had.
I judge Hayes on what he did when he was here and most of it was very good. He was never in the Novak headless chicken mode of chasing lost causes but he delivered quality football and qualifies as a modern day Iron legend to me.

May 21, 2021 at 11:00 am #207424No company offered you more money unless you were head-hunted MK, you must have been seeking employment elsewhere for them to offer more, and it’s not quite the same has been a footballer is it, as a footballer you should want to achieve and not just be in it for the money, no young lad starts off that way.
May 21, 2021 at 11:38 am #207428Aye we all start off as young lads in our working lives with dewy eyed ambition and realise after a while that money talks. Easy to do plenty of badge kissing and fist pumping towards fans when playing for Man U, Liverpool and the like when you are on mega money, not so easy when Preston offer maybe two grand a week more and the mortgage money is a bit hard to meet every month playing for Scunny and you fancy a new car too. Paul Hayes was one of my all time favourite players and I go back as far as Barrie Thomas, David Sloan etc, loved watching Haysey play for us, he deserved his moves and more money in a short career, don’t begrudge the lad a penny he was a great player for us, good luck to him and any player who improves their lot after leaving us.

May 21, 2021 at 11:57 am #207433Shame we didn’t have more players playing for a move for more money last season. I’d be amazed if any of those OOCs improved their income although they’ll likely get more than our new contract offer. On a regular basis none of them showed themselves to be ” top L2 or better” IMO.

May 21, 2021 at 3:51 pm #207445Course he earnt is moves he was a great player but Imo he should have stayed and shown some loyalty like Joe Murphy did, my dislike only begun when he joined morally and financially corrupt Preston, when they took him on they were £20 million plus in debt in 2010, with a tax winding up order shares suspended on the stock exchange, but they got lucky and so did Haysey when Hemmings bailed them out.
