The play off victory at home to Swansea
The Wembley victories
The home victory against Sheff United in our first championship season
Beating Sheff Wed away in a mid week night game when Laws was in charge of them
I really enjoyed wolves away in our first championship season on a freezing cold night in Wolverhampton
God it’s been an awful 4 years of football!
Here’s to the good times and I hope they come round again!

April 15, 2022 at 8:35 pm #235713The playoff win against Millwall.
Beating Hull 1-0 on their turf with a Mike O’Connor 89th minute goal…living near Hull, priceless.
Beating Newcastle on that Tuesday night 2-1. And how times have changed -Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins:
“We have the smallest fan base and the smallest budget in the division. But it’s what you do on the field of play. We’ve got a fantastic team spirit.“This is a great victory. When we got promoted, this was the first game everybody was looking for; Newcastle United at home.
“We packed Glanford Park out, played against a top side and we have gone and got a victory. We’ve got an honest, hardworking bunch of players.
Today is a sad, sad day, but at least we’ve the memories. UTI

April 15, 2022 at 8:40 pm #235716Terry Heath weaving his magic at the OSG.
Nigel Cassidy scoring at the Donny Road End.
Rod Fletcher putting a shift in.
Steve Deere scoring a thunderbolt v Milwall.
Neil Pointon being that good before moving to Everton.
Seeing Jason White hit the ball after running full tilt.
Paul Longden running his bits off.
Tony Dawes and Andy Flounders partnership.
Matt Elliot and Graham Alexander.
Peter Beagries magic down the left.
The players who brought us some cash in. Cox, Hall, Sharp, Hooper, Keogh, Maclean, Winnall.
Being at the promotion party with the cup after Alex Calvo Garcia’s winner against Orient.
There are too many to list. My memories of Scunny over the past 2 years is not something I care to recall.3 users thanked author for this post.
April 15, 2022 at 8:50 pm #235717Brilliant memories. All been taken away by a clueless ???? of a chairman.I would love to see a rematch with Jeff Stelling on Soccer Saturday on how to ruin a football club.

April 15, 2022 at 8:52 pm #235718So many memories mentioned above, possibly the big wins at Forest, Palace and Derby and we will never forget Newcastle at home

April 15, 2022 at 9:48 pm #235728Chin up Deerey, think we all feel the same – and angry, because despite all the assurances made, this has still been allowed to happen.
All we’ve got now are those memories of the special moments the Iron have given us over the years. Think about them, it’ll cheer you up (well, a little).

April 16, 2022 at 12:00 am #2357481957, our FA Cup win at Newcastle, I was 16 years old and one of the 8,000 Scunny fans that went to St James Park on 10 special trains, Alan Busby was my MOM that day.
Our 4-0 win at Forest, and winning at Derby sat next to my son who was and still is a Derby fan (and also a Scunny fan), I think it was 4-1. Also our FA Cup win at Sheff Wed was great.
Probably my best remembered home win was our 6-1 home FA Cup win over Blackpool when Stan Mathews sat down and changed his boots on the pitch because he could not get past Jackie Brownsword, losing at half time, a joe Bonson and Barrie Thomas hatrick by each of them.
In League 2 when we beat Fulham 6-1, Jimmy Hill playing for Fulham before turning into a commentator and Southampton 5-1 the same year, Barrie Thomas was brilliant.
All of these games have been over shaddowed by Swann coming to our club with his big idea’s and lies, which have ruined our once loved little town club, we have memories, but we now no longer have anything. Peter Swann will never be forgotten by Scunthorpe fans, he ended up being a deserter, loved by one supporter (Uptheiron69).

April 16, 2022 at 12:18 am #235749Not the ‘best’ memory by any stretch of the imagination but a vivid one is getting hammered at Kenilworth Road on New Year’s Day and virtually all the travelling fans singing ‘The Great Escape’ for the whole second half non-stop. Unity and defiance in the face of relegation. That’s before we had the club ripped from under our feet of course. When it still felt like ours.

April 16, 2022 at 12:28 am #235751Very occasional midweek away victories in the early 80s, savoured by the 30-40 diehards who probably just made it feasible to run a Holloways coach. Something would always happen to raise a laugh. Fond memories.

I remember on matchdays Holloway’s asking the 30-40 diehards to chip in a few more quid or they wouldn’t run the bus
April 16, 2022 at 12:57 am #235754Indeed. Remember that happening more than once. As a skint schoolkid it certainly wasn’t me who had the extra cash! 30-40 might be an exaggeration come to think of it. More like 20-30. But it was better than doing nothing. Marginally 😆
April 16, 2022 at 11:31 am #235777Apart from the games already mentioned…
Those FA Cup runs in the early 70s. “Sheff Wednesday, Stockport and Millwall!”
That last game of the season at home to Tranmere and Cliffy’s equalising header.
Personally speaking, beating Bradford City 1-0 (Sharp) when I was in the hospitality suite at Valley Parade!
“Oh flower of Scunthorpe, when will we see your like again….”

April 16, 2022 at 11:38 am #235779Remember being in the press box at Millwall when we beat them 2-1 (?) in midweek around 2000? Can’t remember the exact year but Justin Walker was playing and had a good game. It all got a bit tense when I cheered our winner and had a load of Millwall fans giving me daggers. First and only experience of witnessing a Laws post match interview afterwards. Didn’t have a clue what he was babbling on about and I don’t think the Millwall press could understand a word. They were really bitter about losing.

April 16, 2022 at 12:27 pm #235789Another vivid not best memory; just about making it over snake pass in a blizzard to Edgeley Park, then all getting massively bollocked by Ron Ashman for chanting ‘Ashman Out!’ and only just making it back over the Pennines. What a cold shit night that was!

April 16, 2022 at 12:32 pm #235791Iron away at St James, losing 3-0 and the away support singing about how Shearer had took them down…the Cliff leap v Tranmere, Sparrow goal that kept us up in the Championship, Sheldon supersub v Swansea… The whole Nigel Adkins rollercoaster ride of positivity.
Today feels horrible, but those memories and others live strong.
UTI!!

April 16, 2022 at 12:52 pm #235800The playoffs at home getting to Wembley for me, never enjoyed the Wembley experience to much riding on the results Imo to enjoy, and like Morris said the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle us being big time Charlie’s what a day and night.
April 16, 2022 at 1:21 pm #235803Agreed.
It was St Patrick’s Day too and the pubs were heaving. Great atmosphere in The Bodega on Westgate Rd with both Mags and Iron fans mixing in good spirits.
Hooper was not fully fit so Jon Forte led the line that night. Nigel held a couple of players back then brought them in for the important games against Plymouth and ???.
We got the points to stay up and had our highest finish since the early sixties.
Great days.

April 16, 2022 at 1:33 pm #235807Beating Grimsby with 2 Hayes goals, and Hayes goading their fans after a hilarious defensive mix-up for the 2nd.
Butler’s sublime header v Lincoln the same season to give us a last minute winner when we could score last minute goals.
Flo hitting the bar in the MK Dons playoff before the momentary silence and we then realised what it meant.
Putting on a great display at Chelsea in the FA Cup and going 1-0 up within 5 minutes.
The game where we could relax, knowing we’d already won the league against Carlisle in 07 when half of the Carlisle support stayed to clap our team off. Always had a soft spot for Carlisle after that.

April 16, 2022 at 1:52 pm #235813Loads mentioned already
Forest 0-4 was the absolute highlight but Wembley trips, Cliff v Tranmere, going one up at Stamford bridge, Izzy away at Charlton and playoffs at home v Swansea are all massive highlights.
Couple of high points for me not mentioned.
Jackson’s free kick at the end away at hull to steal it 0-1
And Hayes’ blinder away at Mansfield on his 2nd or 3rd debut don’t remember which.
