What a joke Southgate wins it -he has some of world best young players available but prefers to adopt a defensive set up each time
December 19, 2021 at 11:26 pm #219517Cox n Lillis never got a look in then ..
December 20, 2021 at 7:36 am #219529Cox can feel aggrieved at not winning as he had a great week in training

December 20, 2021 at 9:14 am #219533December 20, 2021 at 9:49 am #219539State of England fans, getting to the first final in 55 years and still not being happy about it.
December 20, 2021 at 12:58 pm #219553Some people will except boring football if they win, even me, but we didn’t win so it was all just a waste of time.

December 20, 2021 at 12:58 pm #219554it wasn’t getting to the Final the issue Ferrite, it was the tactics when we got there trying to hang on to a one goal lead for most of the game with a negative lineup and making attacking substitutions too late to try to win it.

December 20, 2021 at 1:35 pm #219558TBF mick there were plenty of people moaning about England’s play in their run up to the final, I personally think Southgates record as England manager is excellent and some of the football at times has been very good but for some if you don’t win the prize you have failed, that’s the mentality anyway. Awful lot of crap coaches in football then if that’s the case. I’m actually pleased we are now competing on a higher level in terms of reaching semi finals and finals of major world football competitions, It’s not something the ” golden generation ” managed, despite all the media hype at the time, at least Southgate has pushed us on from that.

So you would be equally unhappy if England had lost in the group stage, following that logic?
but we didn’t win so it was all just a waste of time.
Quite right, what positives or enjoyment could anyone have taken from things like beating Germany & thrashing Ukraine in the quarter-final?

I’ll accept that. 😋
December 20, 2021 at 4:09 pm #219570If one thing has shown is that Scunny fans don’t want the boring tactics that we have been dealt with for years now, even though Alexander hit his brief (attaining playoff places) fans and Swanny weren’t happy with the style of football, most fans will accept (TW) attacking and losing. So I can’t see why we should accept the national side setting up defensively.

December 20, 2021 at 6:57 pm #219592Unless you are playing against a significantly better football team why set up to defend?
Of course you defend as well as you can when you have to but to do it by choice seems bizarre to me. Southgate is by nature very cautious and I called it on here before the Euros.
I still believe we had the most talented squad in the competition particularly in attack. Must be a thing with ex Middlesbrough players to try and defend your way to a 1-0 win despite it rarely working.

December 21, 2021 at 1:38 am #219618Southgate went into self preservation mode against Croatia in the last tournament and was shown up to be a poor tactician so clearly not learnt anything.
We had everything stacked in our favour including it virtually being a home tournament and still he did exactly the same. Mancini showed some nous and all Southgate did we go ultra defensive while he was being proactive.
Throw into the mix he brought 2 players on cold from the bench to take penalties, 1 hadn’t taken one before and Rashford wasn’t even in good form, both understandably missed.
Germany we beat were shite. Ukraine we should always beat anyway really and against Denmark we were awarded a penalty which wasn’t really a penalty to get to the final and still Southgate was shown up tactically.
Thing is with Southgate is he’s the F.A’s wet dream of a manager…speaks well and is quite possibly one of the most politically correct people on planet earth.

Venables got battered for not making subs in extra time for penalties at Euro ’96. Everyone’s wise after the event.
England got to the final for the first time in 55 years, no mean achievement I reckon. And Italy only won 3-2 on penalties. Not a lot in it, really.
December 21, 2021 at 4:41 pm #219644When it came to the penalties we were miles off it. Shame Rashford didn’t take it seriously,(no pun intended).

Topics: 4We were poor in the final against an Italy side, who are no better than England in personnel and we were lucky to escape with the chance in penalties. The one difference for the game was Mancini and if Southgate was a little more creative and proactive we may have had the chance to win it without relying on penalties.
Southgate is a great man manager and likable, but questionable strategically.

Bingo !. Standing there gormless while the opposition manager is making proactive adjustments is always going to end up going 1 way and let’s face it, we were lucky to even make it to penalties.
Bloke tactically is useless.
Ferrite, nothing to do with being wise after the event. You could see him stood there like a clueless pillock just as he did against Croatia in the tournament before.
Everybody could see that in real time. The only person who would have been blind to it would have been Stevie Wonder.
Twice the stupid sod has done this now in following tournaments. That’s no coincidence, he’s tactically clueless.
FA’S wet dream of a manager though, he says all the right things and is as P.C as they come…still doesn’t change the fact that he’s no idea what he’s doing in tight games when the pressure is on and he has to act.
All he does is go like for like “usually subs way too late when they all look knackered” and sticks everybody behind the ball.
Stands on the sidelines in true Alan Knill folderoll style and looks gormless.

December 22, 2021 at 8:55 am #219688It’s amazing you aren’t in charge of a Premier League team WG, the way you see everything in the game so clearly and so easily. Your ability to spot things that people who have worked in the game all their lives miss is incredible.

Ah…but do they miss them?

You’re trying to tell me that you didn’t notice us sitting behind the ball defending within an inch of our lives while Mancini was altering his tactics and bringing on fresh players ?
Why do you have to be a football expert to see that ?. All you had to do was just take notice of what was happening.
I have my eyesight so was able to simply watch it. Many fans said the same regarding Southgate in real time while watching the match unfold.
They all experts as well or did they simply just watch what was unfolding ?
