I’ve been a big critic, was by no means outstanding or a massive goal threat today, but put a shift in and didn’t look out of place.
August 28, 2021 at 6:06 pm #212790Not being a massive goal threat is not really a great recommendation for a striker, particularly a lone one. On the plus side he can’t have been anywhere near match fit, when did he last play?
August 28, 2021 at 6:26 pm #212793Never seen the guy play live before and Cass makes a very good point about fitness, I thought the lad did ok without being outstanding, which I would not expect anyway after such a long period out with injury. I’m giving the lad a chance to prove himself and I think others should too, look how Rory has improved in his last few games. We need to give these young guys a chance and be prepared to take the rough with the smooth this season, we have no choice, no budget means no experience or quality in abundance.

August 28, 2021 at 6:34 pm #212795I thought he played well and didn’t let anyone down.

August 28, 2021 at 6:53 pm #212797He worked hard without ever really doing much…apart from one of bits control from a high ball I’ve ever seen from a Scunny player.
August 28, 2021 at 8:05 pm #212810I thought he did really well considering, won plenty in the air, put himself about and looked tidy enough.
Jarvis did everything expected of a target man. These kind words are coming from somebody who’s ripped him to pieces so a part of me must be impressed.
Watson had another assured game. Goes to show putting the fear of god into somebody with trying to turf them out has on their performances when they they know they have one last chance.
I can’t fault him. I also said poppadom hands couldn’t catch a cold so in my eyes he’s performing like Oliver Kahn in his pomp.
Green still not convinced with upfront. I’d go Jarvis and O’Neil upfront and stick him outwide.

August 29, 2021 at 9:47 am #212831I agree. Neil is now in the position to start getting the best out of his players – and it is beginning to show.
Rory’s command of his area yesterday was the best ever seen from him.I do not think that it has helped massively when so many on here have attacked so many players as being: useless; the worst GK we have ever had; the worst player ever signed by the club etc.
Rory, Jarvo and Hippo have all suffered those kinds of attacks. Rushing to judgements rarely makes things better but can utterly destroy confidence.
(Me? – I’ve only ever had a real go at just one player – he’s now at Lincoln.)Devarn Green is an enigma. You just know that there is enough ability and speed in there to turn him into a pretty good player but we do struggle to get it out of him. The lad tries – and works – he is no sluggard.
I can only conclude that the issue is in decision-making. That is something tough to train into a player.August 29, 2021 at 9:51 am #212834I guarantee that had we lost yesterday the term “headless chicken” would have been used!
August 29, 2021 at 9:57 am #212835Maybe the solution is to give the lad a narrower brief. Work this flank. If you find yourself in a position to beat a man; outrun a player; get in a telling pass; make a cross – then just do it! If you can’t – then don’t lose possession.
Just a thought.

August 29, 2021 at 10:40 am #212837I think you’re right les, we’re talking about lower league players here not internationals. Keep it simple at the start and hopefully move upwards from there.

All 3 ad been absolute rubbish though. Watson has improved, Hippolyte looks better but with Jarvis it’s obviously still early days.
You can’t surely say people were wrong to highlight the fact they were all crap last season ?.
Watson if you take out these run of games where he’s improved dramatically he’d have been right up there in the worst GK category.
Maybe CM suits Hippolyte more than out wide, he does look better in there than on the flanks.
August 30, 2021 at 7:22 am #212862I’m not saying that people cannot criticise, WG – it’s just been so over the top.
There’s a big difference between “I really am not too impressed with X” – which may well be wholly reasonable but things like “The worst player we have ever signed” is cruel, inaccurate, unhelpful, confidence-destroying and a classic knee-jerk response.August 30, 2021 at 9:05 am #212864“The worst player we have ever signed” is cruel, inaccurate, unhelpful, confidence-destroying and a classic knee-jerk response.”
Only used nowadays by people too young to remember Tomi Ameobi les.

August 30, 2021 at 10:18 am #212867Every player should be at least be given a chance to show what they can do, Aaron was criticised before he even got chance because which is unfair.
And has as been said he will probably not score 20 goals a season for us but after yesterday you can see he will be a handful, as they say one swallow doesn’t make a summer but Saturday he did ok.

August 30, 2021 at 1:39 pm #212880Looking through the rose-tinteds we’re not alone in finding goals hard to come by.
Only 8 teams have managed more than a goal a game thus far. Several have scored fewer than us (yes, really!) including our next opponents.
As we know from previous, more successful campaigns if you have a finisher (Forrester, Winnall, Sharp, Madden eg) it can make all the difference.
Not sure if we have such a player in the building, but given the defence looks okay and if we can get players fit and keep them Covid free, we may be able to score enough to keep us out the bottom two.
August 30, 2021 at 1:47 pm #212881Hopefully Scrimshaw can be that finisher we need. Can also see him working well as a partnership with Loft. I think if either of those were in the team on Saturday we would have finished some of those clear cut chances we created!

I’ve never actually said anything like that. Only player I’d ever put in the category is Turan and that’s not his fault, he didn’t sign himself.
As Cassidy stated Ameobi wasn’t exactly a gem. I look back on him and do laugh lol
I also remember ” The man with wand for a left foot” Mr Ferreti, couldn’t hit a barn door.
Andy Parton who couldn’t finish his dinner…we’ve had some right stunners.
Turan is as bad if not worse as he’s not even deemed good enough to even play any sort of part, but as I said it’s not really his fault.
Step forward Swannster.
August 30, 2021 at 9:35 pm #212900Daruius Henderson, Chris Iwelumo, Ian ormonroyd, Tommy Johnson and Geoff horsfield didn’t exactly tear up any tree’s whilst with us.
August 31, 2021 at 12:16 am #212903Tommy Johnson
We signed him knowing he was injury prone and low and behold he was always picking up injuries…when he did play he was bang average. I remember him having flame red hair.
I forgot Bob Taylor we signed on loan who looked like he was one kick away from a heart attack and Matt Bailey who I would say is actually worse than Tomi Ameobi was. I remember we signed him from Stockport as a target man and he was shocking.
If I remember rightly he was unsurprisingly converted into a CB and he ended up playing in the lower leagues.
August 31, 2021 at 9:05 am #212910I also remember Damian Henderson (from Scarborough I think) Manager Richard Money described him as “the best player of his type in the division” and he was right! Sadly his ‘type’ was absolute donkey.
August 31, 2021 at 9:07 am #212911Pretty tough ask for Jarvis to lead the line after so long out with injury and, presumably, virtually no reserve games to get back up to speed in.
August 31, 2021 at 9:30 am #212917He got stuck in – which was what I liked.
Had to have been ‘ring rusty’. So, all in all, may or not chase for the first eleven but will, at least, be an option.1 user thanked author for this post.
August 31, 2021 at 9:44 am #212924He also got, what, two or three goals off the bench last season? Not the stuff of legends but it’s at least something and there’s no reason why he can’t improve, given the chance.
August 31, 2021 at 11:18 am #212932“The worst player we have ever signed”
A title that will never be taken from George Miller.
August 31, 2021 at 8:05 pm #212972I’ve been a big critic, was by no means outstanding or a massive goal threat today, but put a shift in and didn’t look out of place.
Okay yeah he looked busy, all his work however ie grappling with the Tranmere centre half was 10 yards outside the penalty box. Once the wrestling finished so was his attack there was no second movement into a more forward position.
No shots or headers on target and didn’t get into the 6 yard box or even look a goal threat also he did not chase everything down, often leaving balls not directly to him or missing him for others to chase.
By contrast, the week before Scrimshaw was all over the Sutton defence in all area’s. He chased everthing and looked a constant goal threat.
I wish Mr Jarvis well and desperately want him to succeed. Work rate needs to improve dramatically though.
August 31, 2021 at 8:20 pm #212977Give the lad a break. Been injured for 9 months. Don’t know how long he has been back in training but certainly didn’t get a warm up game. If he still not a goal threat after 2 or 3 more games then fair enough.

September 1, 2021 at 12:21 am #213001A title that will never be taken from George Miller.
Telling you now Matt Bailey would have made him look like pele. Tomi Ameobi also took the worst shot I’ve ever seen away at Plymouth “live or on tv”.
Absolutely diabolical.
Miller was poor though to be fair.
What ironking needs to remember is that Scrimshaw was match fit and that was Jarvis first game in 9 months. I thought considering that he played bloody well, he won his fair share in the air and that touch when he killed the ball stone dead was sublime.
This is coming from somebody who’s absolutely hammered him as well. Even I was impressed at that effort he put in after all that time out. Jarvis to me looked like a tidy enough target man.
I was surprised when I read he’s only 23yr old, maybe there is a glimmer of hope there with him after all.
Lets see. It was only 1 game but if that’s his starting point after 9 months out, he’s undoubtedly going to be capable of more once match fit.
Least he’s at least somewhat proved he’s a viable option at the very least.
September 1, 2021 at 7:46 am #213004Watch Miller go now that he has signed for Walsall!
September 1, 2021 at 4:43 pm #213029I saw that and laughed, he didn’t look very good did he bless him !
