An Open Letter to Peter Swann

Dear Peter,
I have supported SUFC for almost 60 years and find it hard to believe the position we now find ourselves in. As someone who has always supported you – and all of the club’s previous chairmen and owners – I am writing this open letter in the hope you will listen to constructive criticism and actually do something to address our current plight.

First, Neil Cox has to go. The excuses have run out and today’s result is just embarrassing. He simply is not up to the job. As for his replacement, this is going to be a problem not least because of your previous history with managers. Despite this there must be someone out there willing to make a name for themselves providing you let them get on with the job they need to do.

Second, you need to show supporters that you really do care about the club. This will take time because, quite frankly, we’ve all lost any faith or trust in you. Yes, even those of us who have always supported you are now struggling to do so – it’s impossible to defend the indefensible.

As for the money you’ve put into the club, just how much do you think a lot of supporters have contributed over a lifetime of watching the Iron? Tens of thousands of pounds, which might be pocket money for you but represents a huge financial commitment for the typical supporter. So, please don’t come out with any excuses about the money you’ve put in.

Finally, I cannot believe you will want to be remembered as the man who took SUFC out of the league. People have incredibly long memories – plenty of the older supporters will remember how the club sold Barrie Thomas and almost certainly denied our making the top-flight for the only time in our history. That’s bad enough, but just imagine if you go down as the man who took us down and out of the league all together. You would never be forgiven, I assure you, by me or any other fan for as long as we live.

SUFC fans deserve better than this.

The issue is VANITY !

Mr Swann will not put the club up for sale because he is scared that someone will actually make it a success. Will get the fans back, lapsed season ticket sales on the increase. And restore a family club attitude.

Entirely predictable responses from the usual suspects. I’m not going to apologise for calling out the moaners and groaners. If all you ever do is moan and groan about anything and everything, as a number on this board have done since the days of Wharton then why should anyone take you seriously.

As for this being about “me, me, me”, what a ridiculous comment. It has nothing whatever to do with me and everything to do with MY club, just as it has to do with YOUR club. SUFC “belongs” to all of us who support it.

I always have and always will support the chairman and owner of my club for as long as I feel able to do so. I no longer feel able to support Peter Swann, which I find extremely sad, though I will happily do so again if he is willing to turn things around.

Unless and until Cox goes, however, that seems unlikely.

I am not going to cast aspersions of vanity, but I can understand why the posting style has irritated some. Swann is going to pay no more attention to you than anyone else. I don’t see why your feelings couldn’t be summed up in response to the other threads set up on this topic, with less of a focus on your voice. It may not have been your intention, but it can easily be perceived as such. This isn’t meant to be an attack, just a pointer.

That said, I am not sure the 99% wanting a pat on the back for being right is any better. What matters most now is pushing for the club to move in the right direction and I am more convinced than ever that this means finding an alternative to Swann.

And the word vanity does sum him up, he will not want someone else to succeed. If he did then the announcement would be made and the agents board would be at the front gate.

Seems no one from the Swann household could make it to Harrogate, today the minimum should have been a statement of apology – not going to happen is it.

The fact is that Bucks suddenly jumps in with his “open letter” like Rik Mayall as Lord Flasheart having hardly made a single post on this forum for the last 18 months, he had seen the light!!

And he is still having a go at posters for reaching the same conclusion about Swann at least 3 years before he has suddenly seen the light. Extreme vanity!!!
