No, not a ‘lost’ Bob Dylan song, but a comment on Fans64’s precis of the Trust meeting, attended by the SUFC board:
Very high wage bill,a legacy.
Wage bill less.
7 players taking bulk of current budget.
That suggests to me that there are seven players who will all probably turn down reduced terms after this season (if they’re out of contract). Along with everyone else I suspect some of those names are Fitzsimons, Whitehall, Clunan and Roberts – and I expect them to leave.
Let’s presume we fail to achieve promotion this season…
My first question then is, could we reasonably expect to get promoted the following season without those key men? Wouldn’t we be left with (and adding more of) your Fishburns and so on?
My second question then is, if we do get promoted this season, what significant financial difference will there be to the club’s income, and what knock-on effect will that have to player budget? Will the buzzword still be ‘sustainability’ if we’re in NL and if so will there still, therefore, only be lower terms on the table for the players?
If so, how could we expect to survive up a Division?
January 30, 2025 at 4:24 pm #298204I have no answers.
I don’t expect to see us return to the EFL in my remaining lifetime – approximately 15 years.January 30, 2025 at 4:47 pm #298206Shows the dilemma caused by careless profligacy with Dave’s shiny things to placate fans strategy. We’re left picking up the pieces of his (and Swann’s) chaos and trying to progress the squad with players suitable for our level. I will say that we don’t know what’s round the corner. Stockport were down here for years, but they recovered, so it’s not all over.

I don’t think it’s all over, either. But I do think we need to manage our general expectations quite substantially. Whether we win promotion or not it seems we’re in a very difficult ‘holding pattern’ from which there’s little chance of escape. As I said elsewhere, I expect to yo-yo between this Division and the NL for several years. This might be as good as it can get.
January 30, 2025 at 5:39 pm #298208I’ll repeat the point I made earlier on another thread. Those high earners will not match their current earnings at any team at a level realistic to their abilities. They will be taking a pay cut wherever they’re playing next season. If they’re settled here and we can be close to any other offer they receive it’s possible that some might stay. (maybe)
For example, it’s harsh, I know but could Fitz be retained in a player/coach capacity if we save Mussy’s wages.2 users thanked author for this post.
January 30, 2025 at 5:40 pm #298209We should survive in an higher division being one of the top crowd pulling teams probably 7th or 8th in that category.
When it comes to expenditure who knows, how many clubs have the luxury of a catering manager a restaurant and office staff to cobble dogs with.
Didn’t Dave try to reduce staff, shut the restaurant, out source the catering, open the ticket office and shop just one day a week and reduce the amount of stewards, all the things the club should be looking at, and maybe just take advantage of selling alcohol that can be drunk in the ground, from what I’ve seen scunny fans certainly like a drink. The girlie teams are going to take advantage of it why not us.
We just can’t seem to follow the markets most tend to keep the premier events the most expensive we drop our prices (Chester game this season and last) thought the new CEO would have intervened there.
January 30, 2025 at 7:33 pm #298229Yep ,he tried to to run the club down as you just described above
January 30, 2025 at 7:51 pm #298232And that being what most fans wanted after Swanny! Change by cutting the costs for the league we’ve found ourselves in.
January 30, 2025 at 8:14 pm #298233There was a comment made stating some players would maybe resign because some prefer to have security “a longer contract” with a smaller wage. To be fair those players will be on a hell of a lot for this level.
We’re in desperate need for further investment.
January 30, 2025 at 8:27 pm #298234How do clubs like Wycombe get to 2nd place in league 1 with tickets very similar in price to ours and average crowds only 1000 or so higher?
How do Tamworth win our league and comfortably survive in the league above with crowds a quarter of ours?
How many of our magnificently expensive 7 would make their first teams?

Silly argument as Wycombe are so high up in lg 1, so you can leave them out of the equation. Roberts would more than likely get into Tamworth’s team, but apart from him I’d be struggling to name another.

Don’t forget WG your hardly a good judge of a player.January 30, 2025 at 9:40 pm #298238Thanks for answering one of my questions SYI. That probably explains it.
Takes you back to when we used to do that stuff without the billionaire.

I have posted a few times precisely this .. expect to loose most of the Hilton high earners come the end of the season or their contracts, Im surprised Roberts is still here.
Great idea to Keep Fitz at the expense of the club fossil Muzzy , nowt against him hes dodged so many bullets his time has to come.
With this predicted exodus we will either be stuck in NLN much longer or if promoted this season struggle in the NL
I have no answers.
I don’t expect to see us return to the EFL in my remaining lifetime – approximately 15 years.again IMO
3 to 5 years to get out of NLN (sorry cant see it being this season despite current form and standings)When finally into NL expect another 3 to 5 years just surviving mid lower table possibly even flirting around relegation hopefully building and challenging at the top in year 5 and on wards
So going on that 6 to 12 years in non league before getting back to the EFL.
Things may change regarding how promotion and relegation places are currently decided ie top 2 automatic up and 1 via playoffs to fall in line same as the EFL.

Henning Wehn really funny guy, he’s always good value on HIGNFY.
January 31, 2025 at 11:13 am #298290Funny clip too. Did you manage to watch it? Can only find it as a Facebook clip. Remember seeing Henning in the mid 90s when he first started out in comedy over here. Always a class act and loves his football.
January 31, 2025 at 11:48 am #298291Is the right option to cash in on one of those 7 players to help offset the cost of keeping the others?
January 31, 2025 at 8:35 pm #298307With a 60k shortfall every month I can see a fair few of those going.
January 31, 2025 at 9:32 pm #298309Cant understand it myself in July Michelle said the debt was nearly paid off from £1.500,000+ but now we’re accruing a 65k shortfall every month what’s gone wrong.
January 31, 2025 at 11:22 pm #298310Difference is debt and cash flow. We’ve reduced the debt down to 150kish?, yet still have the legacy wages from the Hilton era which can’t be sustained on our crowds. We have 1 player on the books on a reported 2.5k a week still, not his fault nor the current owners.
Our options are either: reduce costs, or increase revenue. With the latter I’m not sure what else we can realistically do, our crowds have held up well with our historic averages and we’ve had lots of local businesses get involved with sponsorship etc. Even the kit launch was a big success and unlikely to be replicated again.
Our only real option next year, regardless of the league, is going to be slash the wage bill. Additionally, we have to put form of some strategy in place with regards to recruitment which is why the recently head of recruitment role is absolutely vital. Our scatter gun approach to transfers just isn’t good enough and as far as I’m aware our current player recruitment is down to the manager and assistant ?
Myfootballclub isn’t the answer, but at some point in the near future it’s likely we need some external investment, I just hope we fall lucky and not end up with an egomaniac or conman this time.

February 1, 2025 at 12:36 am #298311Pity Joe Henderson said he wasn’t interested at the moment, not a 51% deal but him coming in and buying out Michelle’s shares and some of the other directors shares, let’s say 35% would be a good start towards new investment. In time if he proved his worth and didn’t have other motives then maybe we could gradually allow him in as major shareholder, after all the ground is safe and not for sale. Just a thought but a 65k monthly shortfall really restricts our ambitions and means quite a few years in the wilderness. Next two years could be crucial for where we are gonna end up IMO.
February 1, 2025 at 2:12 am #298313maybe a cull …. off load some / most of these high earners and build again with players on realistic wages for this level thus staying in NLN a few more years in this process.
YES or No guys ????
February 1, 2025 at 5:37 am #298314Without a mega millionaire / billionaire backer, then the options are limited.
1) run up debts and go bust
2) income – costs = break evenSo, we ain’t an attractive proposition to an egotistical owner as we don’t have the fanbase & catchment area. A philanthropic owner… Dear Mr Gates.
Currently, the only option is to sell anything of value, cut playing staff, coaching staff and office staff to a minimum. Pay as little as possible. Try to cover stewarding, catering (kiosks) with eager willing fan(volun)teers.
The future ain’t looking rosy.February 1, 2025 at 9:36 am #298316Sorry but a 65k shortfall each month is debt, if you think the directors covering it aren’t going to want it back your being naive,Sharp has already proved that, just freeloader’s imo, at the end of the day we’re probably putting more into the club at least we pay for tickets. You wait and see Some of them will take more out of the club than whatever hilton did.
It’s the non playing staff wages that are killing the club not the players.
Don’t forget last season we had double the so called high earners on the books still paid the debt down and this season we’re building it back up on the back of 4000 crowds wtf, if we can’t manage this season how the hell we going to manage other times when crowds or commercial things aren’t as good. From what I can see we’re no better off under this lot than

lol. There won’t be bags of cash with this lot.

Aye, those CCJs are piling up and the club is about to go bust.

Makes you wonder why people wanted rid of Swanny.February 1, 2025 at 9:59 am #298319I think both were at fault for the debt.

They won’t get anything close to what’s been put in for a loss making club with no assets, our biggest selling point has always been the ground/land which is now in the CIC.
4,000 crowds are irreverent when you’re paying league 2 wages with no EFL TV income, we’re spending a third of our match day income on stewards FFS.
It’s incredible they’ve reduced the debt down so much in such a small period of time, 99/100 you’d stick a padlock on the door and start again.
