I missed the interview with Swann as I chose to walk my dog instead (no that’s not a euphemism for something else) but I suspect it went along the lines of “Covid, developing squad, one for the future”.
To me last night’s performance highlights just how far we have fallen over the last few seasons. When Swann and co. arrived at Scunthorpe they made promises of a new ground, entertaining football, and all played at the Championship level. Whilst we did briefly flirt with the playoffs in L1, the decline over the last few seasons has been truly dreadful.
I guess he can say that now we no longer play at Glanford Park that he did deliver a new stadium, albeit in name only…but what we’ve witnessed over the last couple of seasons is very far from entertaining, let alone the standard of the Championship.
I actually feel sorry for Cox, even the most experienced of manager would struggle to polish the turd that has become Scunthorpe United. There is no cohesion in the squad. Players make simple mistakes match-after-match, and there is scant evidence to suggest that things are going to be any better next season.
I suppose one thing has been good for us this season. The fact that there have been no fans allowed into the stadiums has meant the players are becoming accustomed to playing in empty grounds. This’ll come in handy next season when we’re back at sub 3,000 home fans.
