People like the quaintness, the symbolism for Britain and benefits they are seen to bring through tourism.
Undoubtedly some of this is true, but the idea that the Monarchy earns it’s Civil List salary through what they bring in in the way of tourism isn’t necessarily the case.
The Forbidden City in Beijing brings in 17 million visitors a year despite China having had no Emperor for over a century.
Versailles – 10 million pa. The Winter Palace, St Petersburg – 5 million pa. The Potsdam Palaces – 3 million pa.
Windsor Castle – 1.6 million pa. The same as Stonehenge.
One could argue that visitor numbers would increase if the Monarchy became a thing of the past.
Don’t hold your breath though, people who attain power through privilege and not democratic means are tough little gits to unseat.
I’ll add two words to that – Land ownership.
