A generous view is this. That some people got so attracted to the crackpot ideas of UKIP, and the apparent audaciousness and ‘derring-do’ of spreading their lies through multiple identities across social media, that, in the manner of religious zealots, they got carried away. They had no idea where it would go, other than perhaps increase support for UKIP, and possibly least of all that it would attract the far-right, legitimize hate, and blow up in a cloud of toxic racism and profound social disunity. And when it did, they resiled. That’s the generous view.
A less generous view is that it was all done knowingly.
