“Nanny state” lockdown restrictions in the North East will “prolong the pain” of Covid-19, a top Newcastle hospital boss has claimed.
Andy Welch, medical director of the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, criticised plans to impose new rules to combat a rise in coronavirus cases across the region.
In a tweet on Wednesday morning, which has since been deleted, he said that lockdown restrictions should not be used by the Government to “massage stats”.
